St. Patrick’s Day got political as the Irish Prime Minister rushed to shield the British PM from Donald Trump’s barbs

President Donald Trump finally accomplished something that no other American president could: fostering British and Irish solidarity. Jokes aside, Prime Minister Micheál Martin of Ireland defended his British counterpart against Trump’s combative remarks.

On St. Patrick’s Day, Trump hosted Martin for a bilateral meeting. In the midst of it, Trump expressed disappointment over British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his reluctance to support efforts in the Iran war.

“What about your relationship with London? Has it been damaged by the fact that Keir Starmer isn’t supporting you in this war? And has your opinion of Keir Starmer changed because of this?” A reporter asked Trump.

“Well, he hasn’t been supporting the United States,” Trump replied. He continued, “I was disappointed because Keir was willing to send two aircraft carriers after we won. Because essentially, there’s no threat for the aircraft carriers right now.”

Trump proceeded to make comparisons between the late Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Keir Starmer. He pointed to a bust of Churchill in the White House and accused former President Barack Obama of rejecting the bust.

“You know, unfortunately, Keir is not Winston Churchill,” said Trump. Though highly controversial, Churchill has been applauded for his wartime leadership and stand against Nazi rule that threatened Europe.

Martin diplomatically navigated an awkward topic

“I just want to make a number of points,” Martin interjected after Trump finished his praise of Churchill. The Irish Prime Minister continued, “First of all, notwithstanding what has happened, the transatlantic relationship between Europe and the US is very, very important on a number of fronts.”

“I think many of these leaders engaged with you, particularly on trade initially,” Martin said about the tariff negotiations between Trump and European leaders.

“I just met with Keir Starmer last week. The British-Irish relationship is an important one. Churchill was a great wartime leader, although in Ireland, there was kind of a different perspective in terms of during our own war of independence,” Martin asserted. He added, “He created his own bit of difficulties for us. But that said, he’s a great wartime hero.”

Britain invaded Ireland numerous times in history and officially controlled the country in 1801. Churchill opposed the Irish Republican Army (IRA), which sought to remove British forces in Northern Ireland. Nevertheless, Martin transitioned from the statement and went back to supporting Starmer.

“Keir Starmer has done a lot in resetting the British-Irish relationship. I just want to put that on the record. But I do believe he’s a very earnest-sounding person, who I think you have a great capacity to get on with. You’ve gotten on with him before, and you’ve gotten on with other European leaders as well,” Martin told Trump.

Room for cooperation

Social media commented on the exchange in awe, noting the irony of an Irish prime minister defending the British prime minister from Trump.

One wrote on X, “Do you know how bad things have to be for the Irish to be defending a British PM? Lmao.”

“Everyone rallying to defend Keir Starmer against Trump even though everyone hates him,” another wrote. Starmer has been criticized at home by all sides of the political aisle for his centrist stance on the Iran war.

Regardless, in an increasingly divided world, it’s refreshing to witness solidarity from two countries normally opposed to each other.
