Sigourney Weaver May Join The Mortal Instruments Franchise

I'll Allow It

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones hasn’t even hit theaters yet and a sequel is already in the works from Constantin Film Produktion. While the fantasy adventure movie, starring Lily Collins as a demon killing “Shadowhunter,” is set for release on August 21, news has surfaced that Sigourney Weaver is in talks to appear in the next film, as the leader of the Shadowhunters, no less.

The prospective film franchise, based on Cassandra Clare‘s book series of the same name, canters around a young woman named Clary Fray, as she discovers that she is part of a line of Shadowhunters who take it upon themselves to kill demons. The first movie in the series already features plenty of recognizable actors, especially actors who have worked on nerdy favorites. Lena Headey, know as Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones, plays Clary Fray’s mother, while Robert Sheehan of Misfits, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jamie Campbell Bower, Kevin Zegers, CCH Pounder, and Jemima West also appear in the film. If Sigourney Weaver does join the cast for The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes, the series will provide for us both Lena Headey and Weaver as demon-fighting matriarchs, which is certainly a good reason to keep an eye on the series as it continues.

Weaver’s possible role in and of itself provides much to look forward to. The character, who is determined to avenge her son’s murder, is described as the focused and “ruthless” Shadowhunter leader in City of Ashes. It seems likely that this character is Inquisitor Imogen Herondale, a character who is featured most prominently in City of Ashes and works in tandem with the council that leads the Shadowhunters. The character seems intriguing, imperfect, and quite focused on personal goals considering her leadership role. Hopefully this means that Weaver will be able to play a strong female leader with a complex background.

The second installment in The Mortal Instruments series of films is set to begin shooting in October, while a prequel based on Clare’s novels is also underway.  These plans apparently were made regardless of the fact that the first installment has yet to grace theaters. However, with so many stars in the series, and more on the way, it seems that The Mortal Instruments is gearing up to ensure it is a large, and noticed, franchise, even if some of us have been confusing the budding franchise with Beautiful Creatures.
