Put Ryan Coogler’s Sinners Awards Speech in the “Wife Guy” Hall of Fame

Sinners’ Awards Season campaign has delivered a classic “wife guy” moment. Ryan Coogler’s speech honoring Zinzi Coogler is real “relationship goals” material.
Accepting The Director Award at the Critics Choice Celebration of Black cinema and television, Coogler took a moment to spotlight his wife. People might not be aware, but Zinzi Coogler is a producer on centers and a major propulsive force for their work at Proximity Media. The director might be a dynamo behind the camera, but as he so clearly says in his speech, Zinzi is the one that helps get stuff done.
Coogler fought through tears to tell this story. “Back in the day, 2003, I saw a young girl kicking everybody’s a** on the track. I didn’t get her number that day. I built up my courage and got it at the next track meet,” he smirked. “She changed my life. She made me a better football player and better student a better person and she made me a better filmmaker, always played the background and never gave her credit.”
The Sinners director credited Zinzi with being the boss on the fan-favorite. A lot of credit has been given to Coogler, Michael B Jordan, and cinematographer Autumn Durald. But, it took two Cooglers to make that cinematic magic. The filmmaker continued, “ For this movie she was my boss. And it was **** hard. And I think she’s the biggest reason why this movie is so good.”
Sinners is powered by Ryan and Zinzi Coogler

With Sinners surging in the popular discourse All these months after release, the spotlight has shone brightly on everyone involved in the creation of this movie. You can see so much care from that clip with Coogler shouting out Zinzi’s contributions to the film. A lot of folks wonder how she approaches ideas. Marie Claire sat down with the producer to talk about what’s next and the last couple of years this week. The conversation was enlightening, especially because it’s clear how much Ryan and Zinzi lean on each other to navigate the uncertain waters of crafting a film.
“We don’t have filmmakers in our family,” Zinzi Coogler thought, “so we have each other to turn to and to lean on, and we’ve become each other’s sounding board and safety net…I think we’ve found a rhythm and a way to do it together in a way that brings us joy.”
Everything she does might not make it in front of the camera. But there’s no questioning her contributions to both Proximity Media and Ryan Coogler’s ascent as an auteur in this space. Seeing that emotional speech from the director makes you want to hear more about the other people in creatives’s lives that end up making the entire dream possible.
