‘Are you in the Tuesday club?’: Woman goes to checkout at Ross. Then the cashier says something ‘offensive’

Cashiers can make or break a customer’s experience. Usually, they’re the last–and occasionally–the only person a customer encounters while shopping. So, what they say can leave a lasting impact, albeit positive or negative. A Ross cashier’s question at the register hurt this woman so much that she vowed never to leave the house without makeup again.

What did the Ross Cashier say?

TikTok creator Katie Gibson (@hellokatie7) recalls the interaction in her car in a clip with over 796,000 views.

“Some woman at Ross told me I look 55,” she begins, taken aback. “OK, that’s not exactly what she said,” she amends. Then, she shares what led to this.

“She was the cashier. I put my stuff up on the counter, and she goes, ‘Are you in the Tuesday club?’” she recounts. “I had a feeling this wasn’t a club I wanted to be a part of,” she says.

However, curiosity got the best of the content creator.

“‘It’s for 55 and over. You get a discount on Tuesdays,’” Gibson recalls the cashier saying. But the cashier’s answer reaffirmed her initial feelings. “So, basically, she told me I’m looking old and a senior,” she states, scoffing sadly. As a result, she is “never leaving the house without makeup again!” she writes in the text overlay.

Moreover, she expresses further sadness in the caption, “Feeling down and old.”

Viewers offered words of encouragement

Many in the comments section attempted to lift her spirits by explaining that receiving a discount is a win.

“I would have said, ‘Why yes I’m 55,” got the discount cause IDC what the cashier at Ross thinks lol…WIN!!” one viewer commented.

“A discount is a discount,” another concurred.

“What’s wrong with a good discount?” a third echoed.

Meanwhile, others of that age were motivated to head to their local Ross to claim the 10% senior markdown.

“Note to self, go to Ross on Tuesday!!” one commenter stated.

“Lol i’m going to Ross. I’m 55. No one has offered me [a discount] yet,” a second remarked.

However, Gibson did end up cashing in on the discount. In a follow-up video, she posts a picture of herself holding her Ross purchase. “Got my discount,” she writes in the on-screen text.

What is the age of senior citizens?

Most establishments have different age groups of senior citizens. In the government’s view, 65 is the official age of senior citizenry. This is due to the age benefits and programs that can be claimed, mainly Social Security and Medicare, according to Intriem Health Care. Once people hit the milestone, they can become eligible for Medicare. Furthermore, people can start claiming Social Security at 62, and at 65, full benefits start kicking in.

On the other hand, some companies’ threshold for senior discounts is 55. In fact, 26% of those aged 55 and older take advantage of these discounts, Senior Site states. This typically applies to stores and housing in an effort to attract customers.
