Welcome to Pull It Together, where the goal is to narrow the massive field of comic book titles to the ones you shouldn’t overlook. It isn’t about what’s on my pull list, it’s about what could be on yours!
What’s going on this week? We’ve got a brand new lady-led spy thriller series
Butterfly, co-written by Marguerite Bennet, as well as new issues of Lumberjanes, Bee and PuppyCat, Saga, Storm, and the climax of the second arc of Gail Simone’s Red Sonja series! And, for the bargain hunters among you, Comixology is having a sale on Batgirl comics! Read on for my recommendations.
Each comic in the following gallery is listed with its official teaser summary (in italics) and my own commentary (below that) where applicable.
There's no cross domain hackery or tracking voodoo, it's just some sweet jQuery animations.
Please, think of the animations.
In the meantime, enjoy the html version below. I guess. If that's your thing.
Comixology has nearly eighty issues of comics featuring Barbara Gordon as Batgirl and Oracle
on sale for $1 each this week, including the New 52's Batgirl series, as well as classic issues of the '00s' Birds of Prey, the '90s' Batman Adventures, and the '70s' Batman Family. Here are my recommendations:
— The New 52's
Batgirl. It's a great series! 'Nuff said.
Batgirl: Year One: Scott Beatty and Chuck Dixon tell the origin story of the original Batgirl, with gorgeous art by Marcos Martin.
Batman Family #9: The debut of little known villain Duella Dent.
Birds of Prey #8: A sweet story for everyone, but especially for folks who like the Dick Grayson/Barbara Gordon pairing.
The Brave and the Bold #33: Wonder Woman, Zatanna, and Barbara Gordon take a night on the town, and that's pitch enough for me.
Bee and PuppyCat #4
Bee and PuppyCat are running for their lives! Things are taking a drastic turn on this mission and Bee might be the only one who can save the day!
Bob's Burgers #2
In the second issue of the Bob's Burgers comic book we bring you 5 new stories from the Belchers. Tina's Erotic Friend Fiction goes galactic; Bob jots down burgers to live by; Louise investigates a case of textbook tomfoolery; Linda looks out for her furry friends; and Gene presents a musical re-imagine-actment of the story of Mozart and Salieri called 'Genemadeus'.
Any comic featuring more tales of Tina Belcher's fanfiction is one we can get behind.
Bravest Warriors #24
The time has finally come.
We've all spent hours glued to episodes of shows like True Detective and House of Cards that explore deeply flawed and morally complex characters. In Butterfly , screenwriter Arash Amel (Grace of Monaco , Erased ) brings that aesthetic to comics and the espionage genre, exploring the true nature of people who devote their lives to covert ops and the deceit, solitude, and violence that comes with it. Marguerite Bennett has been making a name for herself with her work on Lois Lane , Batgirl , and Earth 2: World's End and we can't wait for fans to see how she explores the dark world of spycraft. There's no one better in the espionage genre than Antonio Fuso, the artist behind the critically acclaimed run of GI Joe: Cobra . It's the perfect creative team for a morally complex story of violence and family set in the web of a global conspiracy.
Butterfly is one of Project Delta's deep cover agents, no birth certificate, no social security number, a complete ghost. When her cover is blown and she is set up for a murder she did not commit, she is unknowingly led to her father's doorstep, a man she thought died 20 years ago. Codenamed Nightingale, her father was once a member of the very same Project Delta, a spy in the violent aftermath of the Cold War, and believes they are behind her setup. Trained to trust nothing and no one, Butterfly must decide whether to seek answers with the Project, or believe the man who betrayed her years ago.
A new series from Arash Amel, Antonio Fuso, and Marguerite Bennet, one of our favorite new lady comics writers.
Catwoman: Future's End #1 (One Shot)
Catwoman's battle to be kingpin of crime in Gotham City takes an unexpected turn when Selina and Black Mask are revealed to be one and the same!
Fatale Vol. 5
The final book in Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' best-selling horror-noir epic. The secrets of the immortal Femme Fatale and her adversary come to light before their final explosive confrontation.
Collects FATALE #20-24
Can Ghost wage a war on two fronts? Between the depraved TV host Von Ghastly and the invisible technostalker known as Hunter, she'll have to use every ghostly trick she has learned to save herself and the city. But behind the mayhem, a deeper conspiracy is lurking.
It's a race back to the cave for the Lumberjanes, this time with Diane and Jen in tow! There is more going on with these wolves and their gold eyes than the girls can figure out on their own, but with too much mystery surrounding Rosie it looks they have to go back to square one. Hopefully, this trip to the cave will have more answers.
My Little Pony 2014 Annual #2
Check out the original Power Ponies in action! When Mane-iac assembles an all-star team of villains, the Power Ponies may be outmatched! It will take a familiar face from Equestria to even the odds! Get ready for super powered adventure like you've never seen it!
Princess Ugg #4
Ülga offers to help her roommate Julifer with her prized Sylvan unicorn in order to practice the art of diplomacy, but the unicorn is spoiled and undisciplined, and Julifer refuses to do anything about it. With a riding competition fast approaching, Ülga decides to take matters into her own hands.
Rachel Rising #28
Rachel's murder investigation takes a dramatic turn when she uncovers a secret society of 'vampires' performing ritual killings and a tip that she may have been one of their victims. Determined to find the leader, she and Zoe begin performing rituals of their own against the shadowy clan.
Red Sonja #12
The wild and untamed climax to Sonja's epic journey to collect the six most gifted individuals of her age...but will she give them over to the sadistic emperor, as she promised?
The second arc of Gail Simone's Red Sonja has been one of my favorite things in comics this year, and I'm almost sad to see it hit its conclusion.
Long ago, after she was worshipped as a goddess on the plains of Africa, Storm was stripped of her mutant powers and fell into deep depression. A brilliant inventor named Forge came to her rescue and nursed her back to health, showing her that she is so much more than her superhuman abilities. And a romance blossomed between them. But it was a love made to be broken... Now, years later, Storm has the powers and stature of a goddess once more, and she is reunited with Forge. But what does fate have in store for the pair this time?
Tomb Raider #8
Chernobyl beckons Lara and her friends as they attempt to uncover the truth... a truth that could cost them their very lives. As frightening details come to light, they must fight to survive as they're stalked by a killer!
The Redguard are closing in, the Kin are on the trail, and the Wodelings aren't letting their new prisoners out of their sight! But even a simple trip through the forest is anything but simple in the world of Umbral —as Rascal is about to find out!
Are you looking forward to picking up a title this week that isn’t in Pull It Together? Mention it in the comments and I’ll take a look! Just remember: PIT only covers one week at a time, not one month! If it’s not coming out this week, it won’t be on the list.
