Pennsylvania Black woman goes to target with her cousin. Then she’s stopped, accused of theft and forced to prove her innocence: ‘I have my receipt’
A receipt should have been the end of the story...
Paying for everything in your cart should be enough to leave a store without trouble. But for one Black woman in Pennsylvania, even having her receipt wasn’t enough to avoid being stopped at Target.
Being stopped after already paying can quickly turn a shopping trip into something much more stressful. This woman claims she knew she had done nothing wrong, but she still had to prove it.
According to Atlanta Black Star, the woman was shopping with her cousin at a Target in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania. Both had paid for their purchases before trying to leave. But instead of simply walking out, the woman was stopped by a police officer and told she was being detained.
But her receipt still wasn’t enough
The woman, who asked not to be identified, explained that she finished checking out before her cousin. Since her cousin was still shopping, she asked the cashier whether she could wait for her after already paying.
She eventually found her cousin at self-checkout with more items than could easily fit in one cart. A Target employee reportedly brought them another cart to help. After her cousin finished paying, the pair headed toward Starbucks.
That’s when the woman noticed a loss prevention employee watching them. She recalled that he looked “jittery” and said she initially thought he might try to steal their purses. Her cousin later claimed she saw an employee signaling to people inside Starbucks that the women were stealing.
As the pair tried to leave Target, they began recording. The footage was shared on Instagram by @maci_mulatto. A police officer and an employee approached the woman while she was pushing her cart. She already had her receipt with her and immediately denied stealing anything.
“I did not take nothing from y’all’s store,” she told them. “I have my receipt, my purse is here, I let y’all go through my purse, all my items are right here.”
The officer told her she needed to return to an office inside the store because she was under investigation. When the woman continued explaining that she hadn’t stolen anything, he informed her that she was being detained.
“We can go back to the office now, or we could go back in handcuffs; either way, we have to go back to the office,” the officer told her.
She remained calm and complied. While walking back through the store, the woman stopped by the cashier who had checked her out. She asked the employee to confirm that she had just paid for the cart now being treated as stolen merchandise.
The woman later claimed neither the officer nor the Target employee had checked her purchases before she was detained. “That’s why I felt so powerless and unheard,” she recalled. By that point, she felt she was already being treated like she had stolen something.
A second video shows a Target employee sitting in the store’s back office in front of several computer monitors. Her cart and purse can also be seen as he checks what happened. Eventually, the employee gave her an answer.
“Alright, I checked it. You wasn’t lying. So that’s my apology,” he told her before returning her receipt.
The woman is now preparing to take legal action. She also criticized the officer’s response, arguing that he did not investigate the accusation before detaining her. She recalled that the officer had initially been standing nearby and had not said much until the loss prevention employee became more involved.
Target has since apologized for the encounter. In a statement, the company said, “We deeply regret that this incident occurred, and we’ve apologized directly to the guest involved. We are reviewing the matter internally.”
