Pam Bondi ignored a Congressional subpoena. Now House Democrats are coming for her with contempt charges

Former AG Pam Bondi at the White House

Former Attorney General Pam Bondi might soon face legal action from House Democrats after failing to appear at a subpoenaed congressional hearing. Bondi was supposed to testify under oath about the Epstein files but refused to do so. Democrats went on social media, threatening to hold Bondi in contempt for defying the subpoena.

Rep. Melanie Stansbury from New Mexico wrote on X, “Pam Bondi was subpoenaed to appear before the Oversight Committee today. This was not a “pretty please.” This was a LEGALLY BINDING congressional subpoena. If she does not make arrangements to appear immediately, we will move to hold her in contempt.”

Rep. Jasmine Crockett from Texas accused Bondi of a cover-up while claiming that Oversight Democrats will hold her in contempt. Crockett wrote, “We couldn’t care less that she was fired from her job as Attorney General. She is responsible for leading the White House cover-up of the Epstein files. Since she didn’t show up, Oversight Democrats will move to hold her in contempt of Congress.”

Rep. Robert Garcia from California tuned into MS Now to share his thoughts about Bondi’s defiance. “Just because she’s not the attorney general now, that’s not an excuse for her not to come in. She was the mastermind of this White House cover-up,” Garcia said on air.

He added, “For her not to show up? That is essentially, in my opinion, and the opinion of the committee, grounds for contempt.”

Applying the same standards

An argument brought up by the Department of Justice (DOJ) is that Bondi’s tenure as attorney general has expired and that the subpoena was issued during her term. Regardless, Bondi was not subpoenaed as attorney general but as an individual. Therefore, even if she had been relieved from the position of attorney general, she could still be penalized for skipping the committee hearing.

Regular citizens in the United States who violate their subpoenas can be fined and, at worst, imprisoned. Being a former attorney general doesn’t exempt Bondi from the same consequences.

Moreover, both former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were also subpoenaed to testify about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The couple initially defied the subpoena, and House Republicans advanced to hold the Clintons in contempt. The standard should apply to those who defy legally binding orders, regardless of their political affiliations or status. If even a former president can be held in contempt, so can Bondi.

No escape from questions about the Epstein Files

Social media has been disgruntled at Bondi’s no-show. Many call for Bondi to be held in contempt immediately, while others suggest the extreme of imprisoning the former attorney general. But people are not impatient for no reason—Bondi was largely criticized for her handling of the Epstein files. Although President Donald Trump has not explicitly stated his reason for firing her, it’s broadly speculated that it was due to her mishandling of the files.

Bondi’s DOJ still has not released the remaining files in accordance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Notoriously, the released files had improper and erroneous redactions. Victims’ identities were also revealed to the public under Bondi’s management. Needless to say, there was much left to be desired with how she dealt with the files.

When asked to testify before the House Judiciary Committee earlier in 2026, Bondi infamously evaded questions. But it doesn’t matter how she intends to present herself in the next hearing. One way or another, Bondi has to comply with her legal obligations.
