One of Matt Damon’s ‘SNL’ Sketches Has the Internet Divided: Is It Hilarious or Bad?

Saturday Night Live just whipped up what’s possibly the most brilliant comedy sketch of 2026—so why is the internet divided about it? Matt Damon and Sarah Sherman’s sketch involves two auctioneers in a crumbling marriage. Nobody expected it to feel so surreal yet familiar.
The scene started off with Matt Damon entering a house with Sarah as his wife. But instead of talking like a normal man on the brink of divorce, Matt starts talking like Dan Dotson from Storage Wars—southern drawl, beat, and all.
But the bit doesn’t end there—Sarah replied, speaking like Laura Dotson. What are auctioneers but negotiators that love to perform? Sarah starts counting down the hours that Matt has been away, saying that he’s been away up until “eleven fifty-five”—with how many times she said “fifty-five,” anyone would start wondering how she didn’t breathe in between.
A Storage Wars reference
This was just the first two minutes of the skit, with Matt and Sarah not tripping over their sentences. When the two finally both said they wanted a divorce, everyone thought that was the end of that two-minute tongue-twister exchange. Instead of finally talking it out like somber people in a failing marriage, the montage just got worse.
“It looks like this marriage is… Going once! Going twice! Last chance, folks,” Sarah said, before a random chorus joined them in their living room. These were apparently their children. Maybe they picked it up from their aunts and uncles from the show but started talking like the rest of the cast of Storage Wars.
The most atrocious part of it is that they got the iconic “yup!” from Barry Weiss, one of the show’s mainstays. To make the scene even more chaotic, a next-door neighbor played by James Austin Johnson entered the bidding fray in an attempt to win Sarah over.
SNL just cooked up a classic
But Matt closed the deal and won Sarah back for a second chance. Perhaps the cast was finally allowed to breathe when it was all over.
One X user wrote, “This is so demented and genius, and I can’t believe it actually aired.”
Another said, “That’s probably the most brilliantly written and performed sketch of the season.”
But it’s not all flowers for SNL, and some thought it was a bad sketch. There were social media comments online telling SNL to “pull the plug” already on their production. Perhaps the reference was too on the nose. Not everyone watches auctions or has seen an episode of Storage Wars despite it being a cable classic. But if people don’t get the references, they’d at least have to acknowledge the technical genius of the skit.
With how fast they had to speak, a stutter would’ve ruined the whole set. Part of what makes auctions so fascinating is the auctioneer’s ability to maintain their flow as they encourage people to bid higher. In fact, auctioneers are often formally taught by speech teachers to master their flow. But Matt and Sarah are comedians. So, to see them machine-gunning and satirizing two auctioneers is impressive in itself. From a technical standpoint, the skit is phenomenal—a rare banger from SNL.
Not everyone ‘s sold on SNL’s skit about two auctioneers. Like in most auctions, not everyone bids on the same item. One thing’s for sure, though—it’s a technically demanding skit that deserves more laughs than it got.
