Why Are People Online Suddenly Questioning Who Directed ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’?

Obsession is in the news for a bunch of reasons right now. But, one poster has people arguing about whether or not Curry Barker actually directed the film.
This rather silly discourse cycle was kicked off by a poster named Christian arguing that someone “ghost-directed” the movie. (For those unaware, basically the argument would be that a more seasoned director handled the more technical parts of the film while the company got to put Barker’s name on the project.)
It’s patently nonsense. But, folks love conspiracy theories and some discourse these days, so the discussion has branched out to multiple different corners of the Internet.
Christian said, “Obsession was the most amazing movie I’ve ever seen but the rumor that the director acted as kind of a “face” for the film while a more experienced director was behind the scenes actually putting the work in kinda tainted the experience for me.”
Someone else posted a quote from the young filmmaker. And, then our friend Christian went even further in his take.
“He’s not even sure what his movie is about or how it works,” the poster argued. “the more experienced director probably should have prepped him more on how to talk movies.”
Did Curry Barker actually direct Obsession?

Yes, everyone calm down. The young wave of filmmakers that just grabbed the horror genre by the ears is the biggest story of the season in movie spaces right now. Backrooms is literally positioned to have a shot at the top spot at the box office this weekend.
It’s kind of sad that there are people out there that would rather start rumors about a creator like Curry Barker than just give the guy his due. He made a movie that a lot of people are digging right now. All of this discourse is clouding that for some of our most online friends.
Josh Billinson joked that there’s more important things for us to be yelling at each other about. And, to be honest, he’s right!
After what feels like years of people crying on the web about a lack of originality, we have a slew of intriguing originals to feast on. And, some of us would rather fling insults at a director with a really unique story.
What happened to the game I love? It’s annoying for now. But, it will likely pass in the meantime.
Still, let’s not do this with every talented horror director that comes down the road now. It’s going to get tiresome really quickly!
