A new The Fate of the Furious trailer is here and gives further insight into why Dominic (played by Vin Diesel) would ever turn his back on those he calls family. “I got no choice!” he says in the video. For those familiar with the franchise, his character is all about protecting “family,” so this betrayal seems out of character. Whatever Charlize Theron’s villainous character Cipher has over him must be huge for him to take such a drastic turn.
“We have been talking the talk. Now it was time to walk the walk,” Diesel told Entertainment Weekly. “Of course I was worried about going down such a dark road… but in some ways, there was little reason to continue if we weren’t going to challenge our characters and the fans’ faith in our saga.”
In this installment, Dom and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are on their honeymoon, Brian (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) are retired, and everyone else has been exonerated meaning they’ve all found some sort of normalcy. However, all of that changes when a mysterious woman pulls Dom back into a world of crime and the crew is faced with their biggest trial yet.
I was originally apprehensive about the plot since it seemed like a female villain had “seduced” the morally sound lead male character, but I’m relieved to know that it’s not sexual. They’ve cleverly woven her into the story, with her taking notice of Letty’s return from the dead in Fast 6 and keeping tabs on the team since then. I also have to commend the franchise on proving that minorities can lead action films and make a heck of a lot of money (nearly $1.3 billion so far) doing so. Plus, they love to push the boundaries in what a car can do in a film, which makes my little heart dance to the tune of the Team America: World Police theme.
If your interest is as piqued as mine, look out for the film in theaters on April 14.
The Fast and the Furious crew isn’t the only one reuniting. The musically gifted cast of The Get Down is returning for a second installment. The television show centers on the musical evolution from disco to hip hop in New York City during the ’70s, as told by the South Bronx teens who lived through it.
Baz Luhrmann teamed up with costume designer Catherine Martin, rapper Nas, legendary artist Grandmaster Flash, Pulitzer-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, and hip-hop historian Nelson George to bring the Netflix series to life with an incredibly authentic feel.
Part I focused on a young poet named Zeke in 1977 who lives with his aunt after his parents died. He soon runs into a graffiti artist and aspiring DJ named Shaolin Fantastic. They form a group called “The Fantastic Four Plus One” with Zeke’s friends in hopes of becoming successful musical artists. Mylene, an aspiring disco singer and Zeke’s longtime love, also dreams of leaving the Bronx but has many obstacles to overcome including her religious father.
Part II begins streaming on April 7.
