‘I didn’t know this was an option’: Women go out to dinner in Miami. Then they find a clever way to get someone to cover their bill

Dinner in Miami is already expensive, but apparently, for some, it doesn’t have to be. One group of women decided to treat their night out like a social experiment.

They tested whether a little confidence (and a well-timed strut around the restaurant) could land them a free meal. What followed looked less like dinner and more like a live audition, complete with stares, seat-adjusting spectators, and eventually, a successful bill handoff.

Now TikTok is split between calling it genius, cringey, or a masterclass in modern-day finesse.

What Did She Do?

The very question that has countless viewers scratching their heads. Not only did Madeline (@madybullinger) video her friend’s bizarre routine for our reference, but viewers still claim that they don’t know how it worked.

With over 4 million views and almost 2,000 comments, the video is baffling TikTokers everywhere. In the first couple of seconds, the video’s text overlay reads: “Seeing if she can get someone to pay for our dinner in Miami.”

The setting looks like an upscale restaurant in Miami, and there seems to be a courtyard pond in the center. The camera focuses on a woman standing up from her seat and stepping up onto the edge of the pond. She then begins doing rather sensuous poses.

Madeline’s friend struts the length of the pond and continues doing moves like raising her hands and swinging her hips. As this occurs, a man from a neighboring table can be seen in the peripheral moving his chair to get a better view of her. The video then cuts to the friend sitting back down and counting a wad of cash.  The text overlay simply says: “Success.”

How Do You Get Men to Pay for Things?

One of Madeline’s viewers states, “I didn’t know this was an option.” However, getting men to pay for things has been a thing many women have sought for decades.

If you were to Google it, you would find a blog entry from 2008 giving you the answer. In 2018, Howcast published a seven-step-by-step guide to achieve it, with many of them seen at work in Madeline’s friend.

The first is to dress nicely. Obviously, if you wear a very flattering dress, it is more likely that men will notice you. In the TikTok, Madeline’s friend was wearing a form-fitting yellow dress. It definitely did the job.

The next step deals with location. “Choose a lively place with high ratio of men to women,” they advise. This also seems to work for an upscale restaurant in Miami.

The third is to leave your friend group, as “traveling in a pack reduces the chances of men approaching you.” This also seems to work for Madeline’s friend, as she had left their table to get the attention of someone solely on her. The other steps rely on actually making conversation with the man and whatnot, which is not the case for the TikTok (that we know of).

‘I didn’t know this was an option’

Countless viewers are shocked at the newly presented scenario. Some had never thought of it, with one viewer stating, “I didn’t know this was an option.” Others need more details, one viewer saying, “But I need to see how it went from dancing to cash in hand.”

Quite a few crack jokes. One viewer with over 800 likes says, “Gonna try this at Chipotle.” Another jokingly complains, “My friends aren’t doing enough for us.”

Many actually poke fun at the man who turned his chair to see the woman better. One viewer posts a screenshot of him and comments, “I fear I know who paid.” The comment has over 4,400 likes. Another viewer does the same and says, “He was ready.”

On the other hand, many women are praising the technique and execution. One viewer says, “Of course this worked she’s giving goddesssssss omg.” Another says, “I need friends with more confidence and audacity like this I LOVE HER.” A third shares, “GET THAT BAG GIRL.”

While the clip might have been inspiring, one viewer says what many are thinking: “results may vary.”
