‘Maybe if they’d sang YMCA’: People are poking fun at Donald Trump after he forgot the lyrics to ‘God Bless America’
Donald Trump may be shouting “Make America Great Again” from the rooftops, but is he qualified enough to make these claims? This is a question that everyone, including the MAGAs, are asking, after Trump’s recent sighting.
On November 11, while attending a Veterans Day event at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia with Vice President JD Vance, Trump seemed to forget or didn’t bother to mouth the lyrics to “God Bless America.” When the orchestra began to play the song, Trump placed his hand on his chest and sang only the first three words, which also happened to be the title of the song. For the rest of the performance, he merely swayed and bopped along with the music. At one point, it looked like he might break into a dance, but he didn’t, likely after remembering where he was. Towards the end of the song, he rejoined in the singing and uttered the lines “God bless America, my home sweet home,” before tapping his chest, taking a few deep breaths, and swaying around.
As videos circulated on social media, many people criticised Donald Trump for his decorum during the Veterans Day event. One person on X (formerly Twitter), while highlighting that Trump would be more interested in singing the YMCA song, wrote:
“Maybe if they’d sang YMCA. . .”
For those who may not know, “YMCA” is one of Trump’s favourite songs. He plays it at rallies, conventions, press conferences, and various other events. He even has a dance for it, that people refer to as the “Trump dance,” which involves a front-to-back hand movement while lightly shaking the body.
Another person on X wrote:
“Not a shocker because if a sentence doesn’t have “Trump” in it, he’s not interested.”
Several others, including a few MAGA people, echoed similar sentiments in their criticism of Trump’s behaviour. Some of them even disowned him as the MAGA head exclaiming that he doesn’t represent the community.
