‘Make America Go Away’: People in Greenland are now wearing MAGA hats, but it’s not what you think

Trump can never match that sense of humor.

Greenland flaunts Make America Go Away MAGA hats

On Greenland’s protest lines, the famous MAGA slogan has been flipped into something intentionally spiteful and unmistakably clear. The bright red Trump hats now read “Make America Go Away.” It started as a cheeky political parody, but has morphed into a massive public statement.

If you scroll through the streets of Nuuk or Copenhagen right now, you might see something that looks very familiar. Bright red baseball caps with bold white lettering. At first glance, they appear to be Trump’s MAGA hats that popularized his slogan “Make America Great Again.” But look closer, and they’re way better than those meaningless props.

During rallies against Trump’s repeated rhetoric about acquiring Greenland, protesters embraced a new version of the red baseball cap. The cap repurposes Trump’s own branding into a call for American withdrawal. Trump’s rhetoric against Greenland has included threats, tariff pressure, and open dismissal of Greenlandic sovereignty. But Greenland’s unified rhetoric now is “Make America Go Away.”

Thousands of protesters turned out not just with flags and chants against Trump, but wearing these anti-MAGA caps. It has become a visual logo of defiance against external interference in their land and future. Some versions of the cap even incorporate Greenland’s flag or clever wordplay like “Nu det NUUK.” It’s a twist on local language meaning “Now it’s enough.” And it really is.

That seemingly silly slogan has turned into something politically powerful, only because of what it reacts to. Trump publicly floated buying or “taking” Greenland, despite Denmark’s clear sovereignty and Greenland’s desire for autonomy. Major protests then erupted, with chants of “Greenland is not for sale” and “Hands off Greenland” as a rebuke.

Trump’s actions have strained NATO relationships, provoked European condemnation, and have now pushed a tiny island’s voice into global headlines. The “Make America Go Away” hat isn’t thus a fashion statement. It’s a nationalist billboard and a public rejection of the notion that Greenland is up for grabs. On X and beyond, people have embraced the hat’s twist.

“I don’t usually wear caps, nor do I live in Greenland, but I’d buy one of those and wear it!” one wrote. Another added with the same energy, “Now that’s a cap, I’d proudly wear.” Others rejoiced at the more politically correct version of the hat, saying, “This is perfect and made my day!” Some also dropped humor-adjacent jabs, suggesting, “It’s what Putin wears when Trump’s not looking.”

The hat does way more than just mock a slogan. It sends a clear message that Greenland doesn’t want to be bought. It doesn’t want to be annexed and demands that its autonomy be respected. And now, they’re wearing that message, quite literally, on their heads.
