For the past few years, Brooklyn-based artist Jonathan Lopes has been replicating his neighborhood in his apartment — using LEGOs. The Boerum Hill resident describes himself as a “LEGO purist,” and is recreating buildings and streets without altering the bricks’ color, shape, or size. In his 400-square-foot living room. He also has a collection of about half a million LEGOs; his rendering of the Williamsburg Savings Bank used about 12,000, if that provides some context.
“It’s challenging to achieve certain aesthetics with the limitations of the brick … I try to get it as real looking as possible.”
But what he’s come up with so far is pretty spectacular, considering those limitations. Scenes like the train station have taken him four years to perfect, and he’s nowhere near finished. He’s also planning a LEGO version of “The Last Supper.” You know, for the holidays. More pics after the jump.
Check out the weathered exteriors. And the water towers!
Here’s a fire house.
This evokes that feeling of how the past is still alive in Brooklyn, with the old industrial buildings still around, whether they’re functioning or not.
This is impressive. Jonathan Lopes truly recreated Brooklyn. My question is: do they make LEGO hipsters?
