‘Join the Draft’: Donald Trump’s granddaughter ignites backlash after flaunting a $233 grocery haul

Kai Trump, President Donald Trump’s granddaughter, is facing backlash for vlogging about a $233 grocery haul. Social media users railed against the younger Trump’s inability to read the room. Because who vlogs about groceries worth nearly four days of minimum wage during a war?
In the video, ‘I Bought My Secret Service to Erewhon,’ the president’s granddaughter perused the aisles of the popular, California-based grocery chain.
“If you guys don’t know Erewhon, Erewhon is the most expensive grocery store pretty much out there,” Trump says before starting to browse and shop for random items, accompanied by her Secret Service agents.
“We’re going to get my favorite stuff, even some supplements, wherever it may be. And then we’re going to go home and try it out.”
Trump would get $13 dates, a $21 Hailey Bieber smoothie, and a $10 lavender lemonade, among other health supplements, merch, and food items. The bill would inflate to $233 in total.
But Trump is relatively frugal. She was able to say no to a $65 candle.
“Like, I don’t spend a lot,” she said as she proceeded to browse what’s arguably the priciest grocery store in her area. It wouldn’t be a spectacle if she were shopping at Costco or Target with a different, charitable angle in mind.
Let them drink Erewhon smoothies
Although Trump never said such a thing, the tone may as well imply a lack of care for those who will never be able to stomach buying a $21 smoothie amidst soaring inflation rates. But it is also worth noting that she is the granddaughter of the president of the United States.
The president, although the highest authority in the land, should still exemplify simplicity and frugality. It’s an expectation for other civil servants from the government—an exemption shouldn’t be made for him or his family. Of course, it’s a rather complicated topic where the Trumps, a business family, are concerned. Regardless, it’s never a good look when a civil servant’s family member publicly flaunts wealth.
One X user writes, “Our tax dollars are going towards her bringing secret service agents to vlog at Erewhon buying overpriced groceries. Meanwhile her pedo grandpa is raising prices so people can’t [afford] homes, groceries, and now gas. We’re living in the Hunger Games.”

YouTuber Matt Berstein comments, “It genuinely sometimes feels like they are trying to usher in a French Revolution.”

And an angry comment beneath Kai Trump’s YouTube video reads, “Join the draft.” Even her uncle, Barron Trump, is being told to join the draft with her after her grandfather had decided to thoughtlessly bomb Iran.
It’s not about what you have, it’s what you do with it
Kai Trump isn’t receiving criticism because she’s a nepo baby. That’s a condition that nobody chooses to be born into. It’s what she chose to do with her privilege and wealth that’s under question.
If she had stopped and thought for a second about the current political climate of the country—about the war that her grandfather has decided to wage—maybe she wouldn’t have uploaded that insensitive grocery haul at all.
Perhaps she thought of her content as apolitical, for the vibes only—something seen in polished Pinterest boards. Because people are far removed from the consequences of life by wealth, anything can be called ‘apolitical.’ But when Americans are one medical bill away from bankruptcy and food becomes a luxury, nothing about her video can ever be separated from politics.
