Johnny Depp to Follow Meryl Streep Into the Woods?

it's time to play the music

We’ve heard of Meryl Streep‘s involvement in the movie version of the musical Into the Woods before courtesy of the film’s writer, who said a few months back that she’d play the witch. But now things have gotten a little more official, both for her and another probable cast member.

Yep. La Streep and Johnny Depp might be in a revisionist fairy tale musical together. To quote the great Mr. Arnold, hold onto your butts.

Director Rob Marshall reportedly told Playbill that Streep is “in” to play the witch, so while it’s not 100%, statement-from-Disney official, it’s looking pretty close. And according to Deadline Streep and Monsieur Dépp “almost have their deals wrapped for the film.”

There’s no word yet on whom the Deppionator will play; I’ll have to grill Susana tomorrow on who the quirky, slightly unhinged characters in the musical are. The actor has previous experience with Sondheim musicals, having starred in the film version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (I didn’t see it, but I heard his vocal chops were kind of meh; can anyone confirm?), and he also has history with Marshall, who directed Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides… yeesh. But Marshall also directed Chicago, so that’s promising.

Hell, it’s Meryl Streep as a witch in a fairy tale musical. I’ll see it. The Deppster is just icing.
