John Oliver’s Soap Opera Dreams Came True

John Oliver really wanted to be on General Hospital. And, he’s getting exactly what he asked for this week.
If you’ve been on social media for most of the day, the beloved commentator has probably been all over your feed. Oliver’s guest stint on General Hospital is drawing rave reviews. Especially, because the man can take a stage slap like an absolute champion.
The Last Week Tonight star is on General Hospital for a three-episode character arc. It’s been all he could have dreamed of. John Oliver stood across from Laura Wright on the fan-favorite soap opera.
During their scene together, the late night host said something truly scandalous to Carly Corinthos. And, she responded in true soap opera tradition. The people over at General Hospital are probably thrilled at all the social media attention over the stunt.
His character, Z is the head of a global spy agency. Unfortunately for him, his failure to release Corinthos’s daughter from a high-stakes assignment got him the infamous slap. Everything from the lighting to the look of hurt in his eyes is pretty much perfect.
Do yourself a favor and take a look at this moment for yourself! It’s an absolute gas. And, hopefully we get more strange daytime TV crossovers like this one. It’s nice to see a genre that people might believe outmoded completely take over the Internet like this!
John Oliver Specifically Asked To Get Slapped On General Hospital
Back in March, Oliver started campaigning for a guest role on a soap opera. He was inspired by Stephen A. Smith getting to live out his dreams as Brick on General Hospital. If a sports commentator with no prior experience could do this, why couldn’t he?
That’s a legitimate question and one that John Oliver faced head-on. He filmed an audition tape using Smith’s performance as a blueprint. And now, look at him. Everything has paid off splendidly for The Last Week Tonight star.
He laid out the entire plan on his late night show. It was carefully constructed and the Internet at large was amused by what he was thinking there. Check out the segment for yourself right here.
Oliver joked, “To all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you. Write me a role, and I’ll be on your set so fast, it’ll make your head spin.”
“I only have a few conditions: First, I don’t want to play myself,” he said on his show in March. “I want to be a character. And I want his name to be ridiculous… Also, I want to do something juicy—like murder or slapping or being slapped or being someone’s long-lost something—and, ideally, I’d like a dramatic close-up of my face. But in return, trust me, I will give my all to this performance.”
This is all too comedically delicious. But, we also have to say, go ahead and live those dreams, friends. There’s nothing out there that’s truly out of the realm of possibility. All you have to do is put that effort out into the world. And, there’s no telling where it might lead you.
