Man buys ring box from jewelry company. Then they DM his girlfriend, congratulating her on the proposal—that hadn’t happened yet: ‘So unprofessional’

For most people, a huge part of getting engaged is the element of surprise. When the other party doesn’t expect the proposal, it makes the moment even more special. However, influencer Isabelle Mathers was almost deprived of this after a careless Instagram direct message almost derailed her now-fiancé’s entire proposal plan.
Participating in the “put a finger down” TikTok trend, Mathers told her story. She explained how she got a random Instagram direct message from a company congratulating her on her engagement. The problem was that she was not, at that time, engaged.
Her fiancé actually bought a specific wedding ring box from the company. However, when Mathers told him about the direct message, he told her it was probably a marketing ploy. Two days later, he proposed and told her the truth. This caused her to see the exchange in a whole new light.
In the video description, she added, “This close to ruining the proposal.”
The TikTok has amassed 794,000 views.
The Mary Sue reached out to Mathers and her representative via TikTok comment and email, respectively.

‘They wanted a tag so bad they risked everything’
Many TikTok users were appalled by the story. One urged, “Reveal the brand this is insane.”
“They wanted a tag so bad they risked everything,” another added, referencing Mathers’ position as an influencer.
“Surely there’s a privacy clause that was breached with that????” a third asked, incredulous. “Like WHAT??”
While a fourth shared, “Similar thing happened to me!!! My husband and I designed my ring together, two months later they post MY RING on their Instagram and my husband hadn’t even picked it up/proposed.”
As several others claimed that this move was “unprofessional,” a fifth wrote: “WOOOOOOOOW sorry this is soooo cooked especially since he was a consumer and didn’t involve any collaborative agreement AND ALSO he saved this perfectly but WOW truly in shock.”
Another engagement disaster avoided
Back in 2024, another TikToker had their proposal surprise ruined. However, this woman had a different reaction to Mathers. When Rebecca Gordon’s engagement got ruined, she urged her partner not to propose.
Yet, in a touching moment, he ended up proposing to her anyway. The moment was captured in a heartwarming TikTok. Gordon was crying tears of joy while on-screen text read: “POV: you told your bf not to propose because someone spoiled the surprise and it made you so sad. Your bf says, ‘fine I’m not proposing’ so you spend the whole night playing Wii baseball and almost miss going outside to get engaged… Turns out he was proposing regardless.”
While others almost ruined these special moments for Mathers and Gordon, the fact that they were able to preserve the magic of their proposal just goes to show that, once again, love conquers all.
