A woman has a warning for those buying a ring from Jared: make sure your inspections are documented.

In a video with over 3,600 views, TikTok user Alyssa (@the_alyssa_experience) explains that, in 2023, her then-boyfriend joined her on a trip to Jared’s to pick out an engagement ring. The pair decided to design a ring. Eventually, they settled on a Pnina engagement band. In the center was a 1.55-carat “real, natural diamond.”

“I was in love with it,” Alyssa states. “It was beautiful.”

One of the reasons the couple went to Jared, she says, was the company’s “lifetime diamond and gemstone guarantee.”

“How it was advertised to us [was that] as long as you … continuously do six month inspections in store, and they check out everything, if anything were to happen to the real diamond, the big one right in the center, they would replace it for you,” she summarizes.

However, when they actually tried to use this guarantee, they ran into problems.

What Went Wrong On This Couple’s Trip To Jared?

Alyssa says that the pair would go to Jared “religiously” every six months in order to maintain the guarantee.

When it came time for their most recent trip, Alyssa was busy, and so her husband took it himself.

After he was finished in-store, he had some bad news for Alyssa. First, all of the small diamonds inside the ring were “very loose.” Some were even spinning in their setting.

“It takes a while for diamonds to loosen up like that,” Alyssa observes.

Second, the person working at the store, a man named Oscar, asked Alyssa’s husband about the last time he got the ring inspected. He answered that the couple got it looked at every 6 months. In response, he was told that Jared had not recorded an inspection since December 2023.

While Alyssa says she had peace of mind about her diamond owing to this guarantee, she now feels a bit more nervous.

How Are They Fixing It?

To close her video, Alyssa advises always get email confirmation about inspections.

“The biggest thing Oscar told us about now is that every time that you get your ring inspected, you should get an email stating that you took your ring to get inspected and that it checked out,” she says. “So, make sure you’re getting those in your email.”

“Every time that we get our ring inspected, my ring inspected, I will be making sure that I see it on my profile each and every time,” she adds. “Thanks to Jared, I could have lost out on over $10,000 because they are not properly documenting these inspections.”

What Is This Guarantee?

The guarantee to which Alyssa is referring is the “Lifetime Diamond & Color Gemstone Guarantee.”

It works exactly how Alyssa says it does. Per the Jared Jewelers’ website, “any diamond, emerald, ruby, or sapphire” will be replaced free-of-charge “if it chips, breaks, or is lost from its original setting during normal wear.”

“For your Diamond & Gemstone Guarantee to remain in effect, you must have your diamond and/or gemstone inspected and have the inspection documented every six months by an authorized representative at a Jared The Galleria of Jewelry store,” the website adds. “In addition, all necessary repairs must be completed by our representatives.”

Has This Happened To Anyone Else?

On the Better Business Bureau page for Jared, users have complained that their inspections were not properly recorded.

“The associate pulled up my account and informed me that I supposedly missed my very first inspection, which they claim was due in September. I explained that I did bring my ring in during that time for cleaning, but they said there was no record of an inspection,” reads one complaint.

On Reddit, another user said that the diamond fell out of their ring. The ring was purchased from Jared.

“When we went to the store after we lost the diamond, they told us that they had no record of it being inspected,” the user wrote. “Unfortunately for us, we also had no record of the inspection. We just moved and it must have gotten lost in the shuffle.”

The user later said that Jared replaced the diamond. Still, they were disappointed by the handling of the issue.

Across all these stories, users advised to get written confirmation of every inspection. One can ask to see the confirmation on Jared’s side, and they can also ask to be sent a confirmation via email.

Commenters Are Appalled

In the comments section, users offered advice on how to solve this issue.

“Some places used to give you a little booklet that would get dated & initialed by the employee doing the inspection when you brought it in,” recalled a user. “Maybe they should go back to that method instead of whatever way they’re doing it. Obviously there was more accountability that way.”

“This is why you have independent insurance on expensive rings. I have mine included with my home insurance. Not expensive at all,” suggested another.

Others simply said that problems with Jared were common.

“This happened to us as well. Went religiously every 6 months and every time they ‘couldn’t find’ us in the system. And for years we had the paperwork that was stamped but they moved to the computer documenting and that’s when we were never found again. Even asking them to add us back in and note we’d been there every 6 months,” shared a commenter.
