Bari Weiss’ New Company Is Bad. And Now They’re Furious Jacob Elordi Is a Thing

Jacob Elordi just found himself in the crosshairs of Bari Weiss’s news outlet randomly. While the entire Internet burns itself down because of Wuthering Heights, The Free Press is focused on other issues. Namely, why they think Elordi is pretentious.

It’s the kind of obnoxious opining you have come to expect from Weiss’s brand of political and cultural commentator. If you’re unfamiliar, The Free Press have a habit of being contrarians who exist to stir the pot and soak up conservative advertising dollars. This week, it’s Jacob Elordi’s turn on the old harassment wheel because he’s thoughtful.

“Jacob Elordi is so sanctimonious that it’s hard to take him seriously. This guy is obviously famous because he’s hot. But, he insists that he’s some sort of misunderstood brooding artist. Watching him do press for Wuthering Heights reminded me exactly why he’s so irritating,” the video argues after showing Elordi explaining his beginnings as an actor. “Oh, you’re so troubled Jacob Elordi? Most Hollywood actors know that stardom is a mix of timing, luck, some talent, mostly good looks. Not him!”

This man needs a hobby. We cover Wuthering Heights and all movies extensively here and I’ve never mentioned this leading man’s looks this much in all my writing here. (Before you even mention it, yeah he’s hot, no denying that.) But, this is the kind of critique that shares tendrils with other thoughtless critiques about actors and artists. Namely, that they should just be happy to be rich and attractive.

Why is Jacob Elordi being criticised?

On it’s face, the critique is so disingenuous. Yes, there are tons of terrible physically attractive people. (Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that jazz.) The Free Press has no problem shouting out the perceived “artifice” of Hollywood. But, for a publication that makes its name as being a grievance laundering factory for the head of literal CBS News maybe shouldn’t be throwing those stones. Actors are a little bit extra. That’s common knowledge at this point.

Nothing in the red carpet moments they picked out or morning show interviews that showcased some offbeat charm from Elordi is that out of the ordinary for a rollout for a movie the size of Wuthering Heights. (Check out the way this outlet underlines Margot Robbie being married. It’s all so silly.) Apparently, this entire screed could have been avoided if this man knew how a FYP worked. You see, if you watch a bunch of clips for research or otherwise, these platforms groove you similar content.

Nevertheless, it’s not a crime to be a little weird and handsome. If it was, the Frankenstein star would have been locked up a while ago. Wuthering Heights has managed to be the talk of the Internet despite some of the controversy surrounding Emerald Fennel’s newest movie. That’s great news for Elordi and sadly good for The Free Press as the “culture war” continues on in perpetuity. It’s hard to believe but, having some interiority is now cause for callout posts from outlets on the Internet.
