‘Its not rambling. It is his plan’ : Donald Trump wants to ‘cancel’ elections, but he is too afraid to be called a ‘dictator’

During his second term as president of the United States, Donald Trump has often been labelled a “dictator.” This term has been used by various individuals over several months. Initially, he seemed unfazed by it, but it appears that it has started bothering him now, and honestly, I am not complaining; he should be affected by it, the same way thousands of Americans are affected by what he says and does on a daily basis.
On January 6, 2026, Trump spoke at the House GOP member retreat. He addressed several topics, particularly emphasising the upcoming midterms and Venezuela. Additionally, he took the opportunity to criticise former U.S. presidents, especially those from the Democratic Party. He claimed they performed the “worst” jobs and expressed frustration about competing against them in the upcoming elections. However, it was his next statement that caught the public’s attention, especially those on social media platforms. People have been analysing this moment from various perspectives, trying to understand it. Here’s what he said that left many puzzled:
“We had the worst president. Did the worst job. They had the worst policy. We have to even run against these people. Now, I won’t say cancel the election. They should cancel the election because the fake news will say he wants the elections cancelled. He’s a dictator. They always call me a dictator.”
Donald Trump does occasionally enjoy joking about such things, although he really shouldn’t, but this time it seemed like his threats were somewhat sincere. After he expressed his wish to cancel elections, he probably realised the backlash he would face if he didn’t clarify his statement and tried to redeem himself by making it seem like he was joking. That’s my take on his comments, and if anyone else thinks differently, they are certainly entitled to their opinion. But I would like to point out that since Trump often speaks in a way that can be incoherent yet appears sincere before he shifts to a joking tone, I believe that his thoughts on halting elections are something he genuinely believes in, and if he had the opportunity, he would pursue it.
As previously mentioned, Trump’s comments made their way into the online world, leading many to raise alarms, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where discussions on the topic were most concentrated. Most users on the platform believed that Trump was entirely capable of doing something similar to what he mentioned, even if he said it jokingly. Others argued that he was just joking and that his comments should not be taken seriously. Yet another group believed that if Trump was serious, then completely doing away with elections does not seem like a bad idea.
