‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ Netflix Special Announced, Promises ‘Extended Look’ Into Hottest Game of the Year

A trailer being unveiled on Netflix is a gaming first.

Grand Theft Auto VI, Netflix

We’re crawling ever closer to that much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI release; in fact, it’s so close the fans can almost taste it. With a little over three months to go until players get to experience the streets of Vice City once more, Rockstar has decided to whet our appetites a little with a so-called “extended look.”

The surprise announcement came via the Rockstar Games official X account earlier today, and it’s already been viewed over four million times. The short clip didn’t give us much to go off; all that is shown is artwork of the two playable characters, Jason and Lucia. However, the promise of a sneak peek at the game has certainly caught fans’ attention.

The extended look is set to premiere on August 27, 3 p.m. ET, on Netflix, meaning if you want to see it first, you’ll have to renew that pesky Netflix subscription. However, it will also be released on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI site at 9 p.m. ET. So far, there are no hints as to what this extended look is going to show us, but fans are hoping the studio will show some actual gameplay.

Grand Theft Auto VI is set to be the hottest game of the year

By the time the game comes out, it will have been over 13 years since the last GTA game released; it’s safe to say the fans are hyped.

As usual, there were the jokes: “We got GTA VI on Netflix before GTA VI.” And of course, plenty of fans are hyped for the game with all kinds of memes being made anticipating the feeling of finally getting to explore a new(ish) city in the GTA universe.

But there was also something else, something that could spell trouble for the studio behind the GTA franchise.

While there is undeniable hype for the upcoming game, with Rockstar on track to make billions from the launch, there is a rumbling from a growing group of skeptical gamers who are ready to turn their backs on the games. Many have seen their hype for GTA VI killed by the lack of physical discs. “NO DISC NO BUY” wrote one person on X.

Others questioned why the extended look had to premiere on Netflix of all places, accusing the studio of greed: “Making us sub to netflix to watch an advertizement [sic] is next level greed, scum and villainy.”

Then there were the fans who expressed their worries that the new look at the game would come with yet another announcement of the game being delayed again.

Despite there being some ill-will towards Rockstar, it seems like very little will stop this game from obliterating sales records come November, and fans are chomping at the bit to see what the studio has been cooking up since GTA V. The extended could give them a good idea of what they’re in for.
