Gavin Newsom calls out Trump’s tariffs as ‘illegal’ and dismisses them as a self-serving ‘vanity play’

The people of the United States have been through a lot in the past year since Donald Trump became president. It’s been one thing after another.
One of the first steps that the Trump administration took since coming to power last year was to launch an attack on the immigrant populations residing in the United States. The Department of Homeland Security, under Kristi Noem’s authority, weaponised the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which carried out raids throughout America, terrorising and detaining “illegal aliens”. The other thing this administration worked on shortly after assuming power was tariff policies. Trump’s stringent tariffs took the world by surprise as he imposed them heavily on foreign countries, not just affecting them but also America. Despite significant criticism, he didn’t stop, and more recently, the US Supreme Court deemed that his tariffs were illegal, but that hasn’t stopped him either.
During a recent press interaction, California Governor Gavin Newsom weighed in on all of this and noted that Trump owed money to the people of America.
Gavin Newsom isn’t mincing his words while discussing Trump’s tariffs
Gavin Newsom has been one of Donald Trump’s strongest critics since last year. Hence, it is known that he isn’t afraid to speak his mind when it comes to him.
In a clip that is currently going viral on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), Newsom can be seen discussing Trump’s “illegal” tariff policies with a journalist. He is highlighting how he was one of the few people to announce a lawsuit against Trump’s tariffs, along with Attorney General Rob Bonta, early on. He is also expressing shock over three members of the Supreme Court ruling that Trump’s tariff policies weren’t wrongful. Stressing on how Trump’s policies are “illegal,” Newsom said, “ There is nothing in the International Economic Emergency’s power act that gives the president of the United States unilateral authority to impose a tax increase on ranchers, on farmers, on small businesses, on you and me.”
Gavin Newsom believes Donald Trump should make reparations for the harm he has caused
In the press interaction mentioned before, Gavin Newsom also spoke about how Trump should be held accountable for his actions, especially for negatively impacting several people with his strict tariff policies.
Newsom, in the video, is asking Trump to immediately “return” the money that he owes ($1,751 per family) to the people who were taxed by him, and is saying that he has an “obligation” to do so after engaging in shameless “vanity play” and “illegal action.” The video ends with Newsom keeping hope in the law and expecting it to bring Trump to justice.
