Planning a regular wedding is already stressful. Planning a destination wedding adds a whole new layer of logistics.

You have to figure out travel, coordinate with vendors who aren’t nearby, arrange accommodations, and more.

Among those extra considerations, brides also have to think about transporting a wedding dress. Given how important the garment is and how bulky it often is, it’s a logistical detail worth planning ahead for.

According to one Chicago woman, failing to do so can lead to an uncomfortable situation.

What Went Wrong With Her Wedding Dress on the Flight?

In her short clip, which went viral with over 1.1 million views, TikToker Sophia (@sophiacorinwithlove) shared a few moments from her flight.

“The moment we found out they didn’t have a closet for my wedding dress,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay.

She films her fiancé carrying a large garment bag through the plane door, down the narrow aisle, and finally as they push it into the overhead bin.

Judging from the follow-up videos Sophia posted about the ceremony, her dress made it to the location safely.

Commenters Wonder About the ‘Closet’

In the comments section, most viewers focused on the mention of the closet.

“Why would they have a closet for you?!” asked one viewer.

“They do,” commented another. “They just don’t want you to use it because it contains the flight attendants’ belongings.”

Another commenter claiming to be a flight attendant also chimed in. “It is a federal regulation that the closet has to be utilized for any mobility and medical devices, which believe it or not I end up having to store at least one on nearly every single flight,” they wrote.

A Department of Transportation guide supports this claim. According to the agency, passengers who need assistive devices may be allowed to bring them on board, where they can be stored in a designated stowage area.

A fourth viewer shared their method. “Yeah, I just bought mine its own seat,” they wrote.

According to The Washington Post, some planes do have closets where passengers can hang their coats or other bulky garments. It recommends asking a flight attendant about it.

How to Travel With a Wedding Dress

While you can fly with a wedding dress in tow, The Knot advises checking airline guidelines ahead of time.

One firm recommendation the site makes is to bring your dress in the cabin so you don’t lose sight of it. While some dresses may fit in a carry-on or checked bag, others may need to be folded into the overhead bin or placed in an onboard closet, if the airline has one and space is available.

For added peace of mind, The Knot also recommends purchasing extra space for your garment if possible, such as a window seat.
