‘I love this for him’: Woman goes on first date with man who wins at every arcade game. Now she wants to ‘ghost’ him
People generally want to be their best selves on a first date. In the game of romance, who doesn’t want to be a winner, right?
Well, one man may have been a little too much of a winner. So much so that the woman says she may never speak to him again.
Late last week, Tiffany Hoyt (@tiffs_diary) posted a TikTok about a first date she’d just been on. Apparently the two went to an arcade. Her date dominated.
“He actually beat me at every single game,” Hoyt says as she walks through the arcade.
She’s not having it. “I think I’m gonna ghost him,” she adds.
Hoyt captioned the post, “Like what??? I hate him #lol #date #firstdate.”
Her post has nearly 380,000 views and 750 comments, many from men criticizing her reaction to her date’s arcade dominance.
Vanishing act
“Ghosting” refers to either skipping an outing or, in its more extreme form, going no contact on someone.
Typically there’s no warning given in either case. You simply stop answering calls, texts, DMs and effectively disappear.
The person ghosted could be a mere acquaintance, a relative, or even a spouse. Sometimes there’s a good reason, such as abuse. Other times the ghoster simply wants to avoid an awkward conversation.
People have been ghosted throughout history. Who hasn’t heard the old trope about a significant other going out for an errand and never coming back? But the term “ghosted” is a modern invention.
Six years ago, MTV capitalized on the trend with a reality show in which contestants tracked down people who ghosted them.
Ghosted: Love Gone Missing only lasted two seasons, possibly due to the pandemic forcing it to be filmed remotely—watching someone confront an ex via Zoom isn’t nearly as exciting as seeing them knock on their door unannounced. Or possibly because some people thought it was a terrible idea that normalized stalking, as the Mary Sue wrote at the time.
$200 to get ghosted
The days of going to an arcade and playing for hours on a bag of your dad’s spare change are long gone. When one person suggested that Hoyt’s date spent $60 on games, she corrected them, “It more like 200.”
Still, even if each game cost a few dollars apiece, $200 suggests that there may have been dinner and/or drinks involved.
So her date may have at least got sustenance and libation, not to mention the thrill of victory—just not a second date.
‘He can’t stop winning’
Many of the people who commented on Hoyt’s TikTok feel that she is being a sore loser. Those of this mindset were mostly men.
A commenter named Rob posted a red flag, adding, “He won regardless.”
Another with the username HarleyRider said, “He still is winning.”
Some feel that her date can’t win for losing, either.
“I’m thinking if she’d beat him at a bunch of games she’d say he’s weak,” someone named Benjamin opined.
Hoyt agreed, replying, “100%.”
