Engagement Reaches New Heights as the Couple to Be Literally Climbs New York’s Tallest Building

For most couples, trust grows through everyday moments; shared milestones, difficult conversations, and years spent building a life together. For Russian daredevils Ivan Beerkus and Angela Nikolau, trust has always apparently meant something far more literal, especially as they climbed The Empire State Building.
The pair, whose relationship was chronicled in Netflix’s Skywalkers: A Love Story, have spent years climbing some of the tallest buildings in the world without ropes or safety harnesses. Every ascent requires complete confidence in each other, making trust the foundation of both their relationship and their passion for rooftopping.
That history made Wednesday’s breathtaking stunt at the Empire State Building feel less like a shocking publicity moment and more like the next chapter in their story.
A Love Story Written at Great Heights
Before becoming one of the internet’s most recognizable rooftopping couples, Beerkus had already earned a reputation for scaling skyscrapers and construction cranes around the world. Nikolau, a former gymnast and the daughter of circus performers, entered the same climbing community before the two eventually met through their shared passion for urban exploration.
Their relationship developed alongside increasingly ambitious climbs, with each new challenge demanding absolute trust in one another. Unlike traditional rock climbing, rooftopping often involves navigating unfinished structures, narrow beams, and dizzying heights without ropes or protective equipment.
That dynamic became the focus of the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which followed the couple as they attempted to climb Malaysia’s Merdeka 118 – one of the tallest buildings in the world. The documentary showed not only the physical risks involved but also the unique bond required to face those dangers together.
For Beerkus and Nikolau, climbing has never been separate from their relationship. It has always been a defining part of it.
Their Most Dramatic Climb Yet
On July 1, the couple once again found themselves making headlines after climbing the spire of New York City’s iconic Empire State Building.
Wearing black clothing and face coverings, the pair ascended the building’s transmission tower more than 1,400 feet above Manhattan before unfurling a banner that read, “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”
The unauthorized climb quickly drew national attention as helicopters circled overhead and live television broadcasts followed the unfolding situation. During the coverage, commentators focused on the enormous challenge facing first responders, noting that the climbers’ safety remained the top priority while authorities worked to bring them down.
The stunt also raised immediate questions about security. Public visitors can only access the Empire State Building’s observation deck on the 102nd floor after passing through multiple security checkpoints, while the area leading to the building’s antenna is restricted.
After making their way back down to the base of the spire, however, the story took an unexpected turn.
Beerkus appeared to get down on one knee and propose to Nikolau before the two embraced and kissed high above the city skyline, transforming what had appeared to be another dangerous stunt into an unforgettable engagement.
Trust Has Always Been the Center of Their Story
Authorities later arrested the couple and charged them with multiple offenses, including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, criminal tampering, possession of burglar’s tools, and disorderly conduct.
Yet for those familiar with the couple’s journey, the proposal itself felt remarkably fitting.
They built their relationship on shared risk, unwavering confidence in one another, and a willingness to push the limits together. Every climb they’ve completed has required split-second decisions and complete faith that the other person would be there when it mattered most.
While most engagement stories begin with a romantic destination, Beerkus and Nikolau chose one that reflected the life they’ve built together. After years of climbing some of the world’s tallest structures together, Beerkus chose the top of New York City’s most famous skyscraper to ask Nikolau to marry him.
