Don’t ignore unexplained weight loss or bloating! Doctor issues a stark warning about what these signs could mean
Better safe than sorry.

A consultant general surgeon has revealed five warning signs of colon cancer that you must not ignore, especially as over 100,000 new cases have already been detected in 2026 alone. It’s a stark reminder that while talking about bowel habits can feel uncomfortable, this kind of taboo could literally cost someone their life. Catching this cancer early is crucial for successful treatment, but you’ve got to recognize the signs before it becomes trickier to manage.
Jeremy Clark, a consultant general surgeon at Nuffield Health in Brighton, UK, shared these symptoms. First up is blood in your stool. According to UNILAD, Clark explained that seeing blood when you go to the toilet is a sign that you need to flag with your doctor immediately.
If the blood is coming from higher up in your colon, it’ll appear very dark, almost black, because it’s had a long journey. However, if the bleeding is from closer to your bottom, it’ll likely be bright red. He stressed that if you see any blood, particularly darker blood mixed in with your stool, even just once, you should report it right away. Don’t wait for it to happen again.
While temporary changes may be harmless, persistent ones are immediate red flags
Another big indicator is changes in your bowel habits. Are you suddenly constipated when you usually go like clockwork? Or maybe you’re going two or three times a day and things are a bit looser? Clark noted that if your routine suddenly shifts dramatically and doesn’t settle within a couple of days, it’s something that needs investigating.
Then there’s losing weight without even trying. While shedding a few pounds can be great, unexplained weight loss is an immediate concern when it comes to cancer. Bowel cancers can mess with your digestion, leading to this kind of unintentional weight loss. It’s tough because many of these symptoms can overlap with less serious issues like hemorrhoids or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which often leads people to dismiss them.
Persistent abdominal pains are also a sign that needs attention. Clark mentioned that bowel cancers can cause pain in your stomach area. This tends to be a later symptom, but it can absolutely show up early on too. If you’re experiencing ongoing discomfort, you need to be proactive and get it checked out.
Finally, bloating is another symptom you shouldn’t ignore. Does your stomach feel constantly rounded and bloated for no clear reason? Maybe it happens every time you eat, or you wake up and go to bed feeling puffed up. Clark said that people often feel quite bloated if there’s something amiss in their bowel.
The American Cancer Society reported 108,860 new cases of colon cancer detected in 2026 by March alone. While colon cancer is typically found in people over 50 or those with a family history, it’s a concerning trend that the under-30 age group is seeing more and more cases as the years go by. Clark’s ultimate advice is simple: if you think something is wrong, don’t “sit” on the symptoms. Get it looked at immediately.
