Donald Trump torpedoes Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, and the backlash is coming in faster than overdue payments

Donald Trump is working hard to show that he is not the same as former President Joe Biden. In my view, he doesn’t really need to prove anything, as his very presence in his current role acts like a detonator that could go off at any moment. But I suppose everyone is allowed to have their own opinions.

Donald Trump is taking another step towards damaging America by cutting Biden’s highly popular student loan repayment program, which has helped millions of borrowers manage their debts in recent years. On December 9, 2025, the United States Department of Education announced on its website that it was on its way to eliminate the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan, initiated by Joe Biden during his presidency, calling it an “illegal student loan bailout agenda” that should be done away with at the earliest.

The website also mentioned that if the court approves the joint settlement agreement proposed by the U.S. Department of Education with the State of Missouri, which would end Biden’s SAVE plan, then the Department would not enrol any new borrowers in the SAVE plan, reject any pending applications, and transition all SAVE borrowers into legal repayment plans. Moreover, the website emphasised that borrowers currently in the SAVE Plan will have a limited time to choose a new, legal repayment plan and begin repaying their student loans.

Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent, while addressing the consequences of this decision and what the future may hold once it is implemented, said:

“For four years, the Biden Administration sought to unlawfully shift student loan debt onto American taxpayers, many of whom either never took out a loan to finance their postsecondary education or never even went to college themselves, simply for a political win to prop up a failing Administration. The Trump Administration is righting this wrong and bringing an end to this deceptive scheme. The law is clear: if you take out a loan, you must pay it back.”

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway echoed a similar sentiment, calling Biden’s efforts to alleviate student loans “unlawful” and “illegal.” She also asserted that others should not have to pay the price for those who could not repay their loans, and thanked President Donald Trump for intervening in the matter.

To provide context, both Nicholas Kent and Catherine Hanaway are supporters of Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Do what you must do with that piece of information.
