TikTok creator Jay (@injaywetrustdenver) is sparking a wave of sympathy after exposing the “scummy” side of the service industry. In a recent video, he took a moment from his shift to share a real-life example of customer disrespect.

With over 12,000 views, the video exposes the massive disconnect between a customer’s polite words and their unsanitary actions. They almost left a bio-hazard for the bartenders to clean up.

Jay had a scummy bar top discovery during a crowded Denver shift

Jay is a Denver-based bartender known for calling out “bulls—t in the world” on his TikTok. So, he decided to take his camera behind the scenes during a loud, crowded shift recently.

To demonstrate what he deals with on a daily basis, he navigated through a sea of patrons, repeatedly shouting “Behind!” to maneuver safely to reach a section of the counter he hadn’t cleaned yet. What he found was a literal trail of used nicotine pouches, known as Zyns, scattered over the dark wooden table.

The customers complimented his service while trashing the bar top

The most jarring part of the encounter was the irony of the customers’ behavior. According to Jay, the group was “cool” and even went out of their way to thank him. They told him that he was a “great bartender.”

But as they left, they chose to spit their used Zyns directly onto the bar top. The group conveniently ignored every trash can in the bar, and didn’t care to use a napkin either.

Jay’s video captured several of the small, white pouches sitting in plain view. Understandably, the sight that left him visibly frustrated with the lack of basic human decency.

The etiquette of nicotine pouch disposal in public

Nicotine pouches like Zyns have become a staple in social settings. However, their disposal remains a gray area for many “low class” patrons. Most pouch containers include a built-in “top lid” specifically designed for storing used pouches until they can be thrown away properly.

Spitting them onto a bar top is unsanitary for the staff. Not to mention it also forces a bartender to handle used oral products. This increases the risk of cross-contamination in a space where food and drinks are served.

How to be a ‘great’ customer beyond just saying thank you

If you want to ensure your bartender actually appreciates your energy, it takes more than an empty “thank you.” As a basic rule, you should clean up after yourself. A verbal “thank you” is meaningless if your server has to scrape your used nicotine products off the counter once you leave.

If you use Zyns, use the container’s discard lid or a napkin. Never leave them on furniture, in glasses, or on the floor. You have to respect the workspace. The bar top is a food preparation and service area. So, treat it with the same cleanliness you would expect from your own dining table.

In case you accidentally make a mess, acknowledge it. As a polite gesture, ensure your tip reflects the extra labor required for cleanup.

The bar top litter is every bartender’s worst nightmare

In the comments section, Jay received solidarity from fellow servers and pure disgust from users who find the habit inexcusable. “The Zyns litter made me quit bartending, I swear to God,” one viewer shared, echoing the burnout caused by such habits.

“That’s bottom of the barrel… low class, no class,” another added, focusing on the social failure of the customers. “I use Zyn and I never leave them anywhere. I find dried up ones in my pockets all the time,” a third noted, proving that basic hygiene is possible.

With his video, Jay tried to remind every customer that being “cool” in conversation doesn’t excuse being “scummy” in action.
