One woman had one of the most original experiences ever after job-hunting on Craigslist. TikToker Kat (@icantstandkat) was perusing the online marketplace when she came across a job that would make anyone raise their eyebrow: A water slide tester job.

‘Fun job’

Kat films herself at what is likely a water park to test out the site’s water slide. “I went on Craigslist and applied to be a water slide tester and was hired,” Kat begins. She shares that the gig pays $50 an hour, and she was there for up to five hours testing out the ride.

“I had to ride this ride over 20 times,” she says. “They put all types of gadgets on me.”

She then shows the seat for the slide, which was affixed with a GoPro. She records the water slide itself and states “scientists and lawyers” were present. In one clip, she dons a swim cap with a crash test symbol on it.

“It was a great time, the team was amazing,” Kat says. “I had a great time being a water slide tester and now I have to come back tomorrow and test another water slide.”

Not everyone was on board

Kat’s unique video earned her 1.6 million views on TikTok, with several viewers thinking $50 just isn’t enough for the nature of the job.

One asked, “50 dollars for yo lifeeee?”

Another user asked what everyone was thinking: “What happens if the slide fails?? Chile.”

A viewer thought there were more pressing matters than having lawyers involved: “Girl hell nah forget the scientists and lawyers I need to know was the medics there?”

Several pointed out Kat’s attire, with one asking, “Why they dressed you like a crash dummy?” “Because thats what she is,” one promptly responded.

Is a water slide tester job dangerous?

Like any other job that requires putting your body at risk, there are always some cautions when performing these tasks. (Despite the fact that it was listed as one of the 10 most unusual jobs by the India Times.) However, a water slide tester isn’t just to test for safety, but to make sure the ride is fun. It’s also unlikely that the company or lawyers would knowingly put someone’s life at risk. This was confirmed by a self-described professional water slide tester in a Reddit post.

Uploaded to the Ask Me Anything (AMA) subreddit, a Ride Verification Tech (aka water slide tester) invited users to share their most pressing questions. In the comments, u/LookAtMeImAName adamantly assured that they were never asked to test a ride they weren’t comfortable with, and they have never been injured on the job. They also shared that none of their colleagues had ever been injured either, but did clarify that it’s because their company has high safety standards.

When asked what the interview process was like, they revealed it was “gruelling.”

“I applied (and they hired me) to be an electro-mechanical technologist,” they wrote. “I have a diploma in electrical engineering. My duties quickly shifted into RV (ride verification) within about 2-3 months as our team grew larger.”

In short, they said it took about four interviews across six months. In one comment, they implied their salary was around $90,000 to $100,000.

While it’s unclear whether Kat wishes to pursue this career full-time (the Mary Sue has reached out to confirm), it seems it’s pretty lucrative with the injury statistics being in their favor.
