‘Because the Chief is in the Epstein Files’: Donald Trump announces tariffs for opposing his Greenland ‘acquisition’

For several weeks, Donald Trump has been vocalizing his plans about taking control of Greenland. However, the people of the territory, including its Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, have maintained that they would like to keep their autonomous identity intact and not be ruled by anyone, especially the United States.
If you have been keeping up with the news in the last couple of weeks, you would know that in the early days of January (January 3, to be precise), the United States, under the guidance of Donald Trump, conducted an operation in Venezuela and captured its president, Nicolás Maduro. He is being tried in court on charges of narcoterrorism and is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Centre (MDC) in Brooklyn until his next hearing.
Following the partial fulfilment (the main agenda has always been to procure the oil) of his wish regarding Venezuela, Trump has quickly shifted his focus to Greenland and has been quite vocal about his wish to acquire it. Trump has been trying to justify his decision, claiming that he wants Greenland from a “national security” perspective. He once mentioned that Russia and China were trying to take control of Greenland and that it was necessary for the US to take that step before either of them did. He also once alleged that the waters of Greenland were infested with Russian and Chinese ships that could attempt to seek control of the area; however, these assertions have since been proven to be untrue.
As Trump continued to express his imperialistic ambitions regarding Greenland, he faced significant opposition from various figures, including the territory’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and leaders from other European nations. With growing resistance to Trump’s aspirations for Greenland, he has begun to issue threats. In a detailed post on Truth Social dated January 17, 2026, Trump announced that he would implement stringent tariff measures on countries such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, effective February 1, 2026. Initially, he plans to impose a 10 per cent tariff on all goods imported to the US, which will rise to 25 per cent starting in June.
Trump, in his post, further stated:
This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland. The United States has been trying to do this transaction for over 150 years. Many Presidents have tried, and for good reason, but Denmark has always refused. Now, because of The Golden Dome, and Modern Day Weapons Systems, both Offensive and Defensive, the need to ACQUIRE is especially important.”
