Your first chance to grab Avatar on DVD will come next month on Earth Day, April 22nd. However, there is a twist.
On the one hand, this release is the bare-bones one. No special features.
On the other hand, the Los Angeles Times reports, “According to sources at Fox, “Avatar” will make history as the first Blu-ray new release from a major studio to hit stores without a single trailer or promotional content of any kind.” That’s right. Just a menu and the movie, so as to reserve the most disc space for all that less-compressed visual and audio data.
On the other other hand, such convenience comes with a price. Depending on the retailer it will cost between $20 and $30 for the DVD, and $30 to $40 for the Blu-ray disc. That’s hefty for a disc without any extra content.
It’s even worse if you consider the inevitable luxury release of the movie. Ultimate Avatar, Avatar: The Special Edition, Avatar: With Bells On, or whatever they wind up calling it. Gotta love that fan decision between owning the movie now or waiting the (excruciating, of course) six to eight months for the special edition. According to the LA Times, James Cameron will announce details on a multi-disk Avatar set on March 23rd. The set will be released in November.
