‘A lot of problems in the system’: Pope Leo XIV takes another swing at Trump’s failures
When it comes to Pope Leo XIV’s politics, it can best be described as a blend of conservatism and pragmatism.
While he holds certain views that could be considered regressive, he also has some that can be labeled as progressive, and he makes sure people are aware of both sides. Just a couple of months ago, while speaking to the press, Pope Leo XIV expressed dissatisfaction with Donald Trump’s efforts to deal with the undocumented immigrant population of the United States, saying that it wasn’t really “pro-life.” His exact words on the matter were:
Someone who says I’m against abortion but is in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life. And someone who says I’m against abortion but I’m in agreement with the inhumane treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”
Pope Leo XIV’s criticism of United States President Donald Trump created significant controversy, with several Republican Party members speaking out in support of their leader in chief. Recently, the Vatican City sovereign doubled down on the comments he made several months ago about Donald Trump’s aggressive immigrant crackdown measures and said:
We have to look for ways of treating people humanely, treating people with the dignity that they have. If people are in the United States illegally, there are ways to treat them, there are courts, there’s a system of justice. I think there are a lot of problems in the system.”
He also added that no one expected the United States to open its borders to allow people from all over the world to come in, but treating immigrants who have been living honorable lives in the country for more than ten years and subjecting them to such inhumane treatment as done by the Trump administration was “disrespectful.” Pope Leo XIV even acknowledged the brutality taking place under the guise of raids conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, noting, “there has been some violence, unfortunately.”
