Indiana Man Plans to Ask a Woman Out With a Handcrafted Bookmark. He Planted the Message Inside the Book: ‘It’s so Cheesy, But I Like It’

Kyle Rich (@kylerich.91) told TikTok he was planning to ask Megan DiFatta, a woman he’s been seeing, to be his girlfriend. He had a simple plan—buy a book, get a bookmark, and ask her out. But when he couldn’t find a bookmark at Target, he knew he had to make one himself.

“I’m gonna ask the girl I’ve been seeing to be my girlfriend this weekend, and she loves to read, so let’s go get a book,” Rich said online as he parked at the store. He explained that he was a four-and-a-half-hour drive away from her, which makes meeting up a bit of a challenge.

“One of the things we wanna do to connect is read a book together. I did some research—I’m gonna get a book that I think we’ll both like,” Rich explained. He planned to read the book with DiFatta as a bonding moment. Some people bond best through books, with one wife gifting her reader husband a five-minute Barnes & Noble shopping spree. Nevertheless, Rich is clear with his intention—he wanted to make things official by asking her to be his girlfriend.

“I’m not a big reader, but I did some research, and I found that we’re gonna read this one,” Rich says, pulling up a copy of Every Summer After by Carley Fortune. The book follows Percy, a successful editor returning to her hometown after twelve years for the funeral of her ex’s mother. She soon falls back into old patterns with her ex, Sam. Realizing a decade wasn’t enough to erase their feelings for each other, Percy must tell Sam her secret before they can move forward.

It’s a thrilling romance novel. Regardless, Rich planned to ask DiFatta out by putting the note on the bookmark. Unfortunately, however, Target had none available.

“For the bookmark, I got some cardstock,” Rich said as he started cutting the light blue paper. He chose light blue because the book cover has the same color. Despite having two injured fingers, Rich started cutting. He also punched a hole to tie a ribbon onto the bookmark.

“This bag was cheaper than a whole spool of ribbon, so I just bought this bag,” he said. Rich took the purple ribbon handle of a birthday bag to use as a bookmark tassel.

“I’m so nervous. She’s not even here,” Rich said when he was about to write his message on the bookmark. The message reads, “Here’s a story I’d like to start with you.” When DiFatta opens the bookmark, it will have the question “Will you be my girlfriend?” written inside.

“It’s so cheesy, but I like it,” Rich cringed at himself. Nevertheless, his gesture won over many social media users, who appreciated the effort and thought Rich had put into asking DiFatta out. One man commented, “bro, I’ll be your girlfriend. that’s the most thoughtful [expletive] I’ve ever seen.” Other women joked that they were about to start fights with their boyfriends and husbands over the video.

But Rich didn’t just win the internet over—he got the girl, too. DiFatta commented on the video, “For everyone asking: of course I said yes.” Rich said he didn’t want to film a reaction video because he wanted the moment to be private between him and DiFatta, but he did tell his followers the rundown in an update video.

They spent their Friday together at a cozy Airbnb cabin he found, went to a motocross race on Saturday, then asked her to be his girlfriend over Chicago-style pizza at dinner. It goes to show that if he wanted to, he would—just like this other man from Chicago who did DoorDash to buy the ring his fiancée deserves.
