Man Went on a Hinge Date and Ordered a $75 Sushi Boat for Four. Then She Did Something He Never Expected: ‘Stole the Soya Sauce Dish’

First dates can already get awkward when it comes to who pays. But things can get a little more complicated when one person orders enough food for people who are not even at the table.

That was apparently the plan on one Hinge date. A woman reportedly chose a sushi boat meant for four people, not because she and her date were especially hungry, but because she wanted to make sure someone back home got some too.

TikTok creator @areyoulyingtourtherapist shared the encounter in a post with around 1 million views. He claims the order came to roughly $75, but it was what his date allegedly did before leaving that made the story take a different turn.

According to text on the post, the woman ordered the sushi boat so she could bring some of the food home for her roommate. But the creator alleges that she also “stole the soya sauce dish” from the restaurant.

The post does not provide much more information about the date or identify the restaurant. One commenter did have a small correction for him, writing, “It was $73.99 first of all.”

Dating etiquette around money can get messy fast, especially when a first-date bill ends up being much bigger than expected. In this case, however, many viewers did not seem particularly bothered by the cost of the sushi.

Instead, several people focused on why the woman ordered so much food. “she sounds like a sweet caring girl,” one person wrote. Another called her a “green flag,” adding, “she cares about ither ppl.”

Her decision to bring food back for her roommate also won over plenty of viewers. “She didn’t forget about her day 1s when she made it big,” one commenter joked. Others wrote, “I love her,” “dream girl wallahi,” and “shes the goat.”

Some people were less convinced by the positive reaction. One viewer asked, “why are people supporting her omfg I get girl support girl but it gets to a point.”

What counts as reasonable to order can also get complicated when two people have different expectations on a sushi date. Others were more interested in who picked up the bill.

One person appeared to believe the creator had agreed to pay, writing, “I mean you said you’d pay!” Another was even more straightforward, writing, “u paid so i like u.”

Others shared their own dating experiences. One commenter wrote, “Went on a hinge date and HE ordered the sushi boat for four people, took a pic of the receipt to expense it at his work (?), put his credit card down, and then asked me to Venmo for my half.”

Another viewer recalled a first date with a man who spent $600 on wine “without flinching,” despite her suggesting cheaper options. She added, “LADIES there is a man out there for you who won’t flinch at $75.”

For at least one person, the price itself was the surprising part. “where the heck do you get a sushi boat for $75?!! What a steal,” they wrote.

The post even left someone wanting to try the idea themselves. “Ok now I want to get a sushi boat on a hinge date,” the commenter wrote.

The creator may not have expected his date to order food for her roommate or allegedly leave with a dish from the restaurant. But many of the people reading the post seemed far more impressed by her loyalty to her roommate than concerned about the size of the order.
