US Army Unit Offers 4 Day ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ Pass in Exchange For 2 Years of Military Service

It almost feels as though the world is going to come grinding to a halt in the days that follow the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Everybody and their mothers is going to be playing, and it seems people in the army are no different.

Those in the U.S. military eagerly awaiting the chance to drive around the streets of Vice City may have thought they’d have to be a little more patient before the opportunity presented itself. However, soldiers in an Army unit in Georgia will reportedly be given a four-day pass to play the highly anticipated crime game when it drops. Of course, the pass comes with a pretty big catch.

CBS News reports that an Army unit in Georgia has been offered the four-day pass to play the game as an incentive to re-enlist. According to the Army memo, soldiers who sign the contract to re-enlist between August 1 and November 14 will receive the pass, which starts when GTA VI is set to release.

Incentives to enlist are pretty common, although this particular situation is certainly rather unique. In the past, the Army has offered bonuses such as college tuition, choice of duty station, or even access to special training programs allowing soldiers to learn and experience new things.

The game is set for release on November 19, but currently, the incentive is only available to soldiers at Fort Stewart in Georgia. There are roughly 130 eligible for the GTA VI incentive, and so far 20 have already signed up. Of course, the possibility of rolling it out for other battalions across the U.S. hasn’t been ruled out.

GTA VI is that important to some people

For some, the uninterrupted game time is worth it. However, it comes at the cost of giving up years for military service. Soldiers who take the deal will be expected to re-enlist for a minimum of two years or a maximum of six years, so the new GTA better be good.

In a statement, Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division, said, “The idea was to have a unique incentives program that connects to what Soldiers are interested in.” According to him, it’s about getting soldiers “excited to reenlist.”

The Army has not been afraid to try out new ways to entice different demographics into enlisting, and this is hardly the first time it has tried to appeal to gamers. Recruiters have previously attended gaming conventions and even launched an esports team that focused on shooters such as Call of Duty and Fortnite.
