Texas Woman Orders ‘Back to School’ Cake at H-E-B. Then She Reads What They Wrote in Icing Instead

Ordering a custom cake from a specialized bakery in the U.S. can cost hundreds of dollars, which is why customers often choose to order from popular chains such as H-E-B Bakery.
At H-E-B Bakery, for example, you can get a red velvet cake that feeds up to 24 people for $29.98 at some locations. Then, for customers who want something more specific, H-E-B also accepts custom cake orders through its bakery department.
However, that doesn’t always go exactly according to plan.
In a recent TikTok video that got over 61,300 views, TikTok creator Jenn (@a.trokeros.wife) shared what she received after ordering a custom back-to-school cake for her kids from H-E-B Bakery. She wasn’t pleased with the result.
H-E-B Misspells The Back-To-School Message
Though Jenn didn’t share an inspiration photo and simply showed the finished cake to the camera, it was immediately clear what had gone wrong.
Instead of a neat “Welcome Back to School” piped in icing across the top, the cake featured a slightly wonky “Welcome Back to Scool.”
Despite the spelling mistake and not-so-straight lines, however, the cake itself looks colorful and like something a kid would probably enjoy looking at.
Jenn also admitted that she didn’t notice the mistake until after leaving the store.
“@H-E-B why did you do me like this & why didn’t I notice … LOL I noticed when I was taking a picture once I got home! lol,” she wrote in the video’s caption.
Viewers Found The ‘Cake Fail’ Funny
Rather than getting particularly angry on Jenn’s behalf, viewers mostly had fun with the missing letter.
“The h is silent lol,” one commenter joked.
Another viewer admitted the mistake initially slipped right past them, too. “Maybe I need to go back to school cause I read it correctly not knowing it was missing a letter,” they wrote.
“Thats it. I’ve seen enough. Close the scools,” a third joked.
However, one customer said Jenn wasn’t alone in receiving some questionable cake decorating.
“They did me dirty with my daughters cake too,” they wrote, attaching a photo of their own cake. In that case, the decorator appears to have tried squeezing “Happy Birthday Madison” into a single line, with no luck.
Fortunately for Jenn, appearance wasn’t everything.
“It’s okay everyone it was still good,” she later wrote, sharing another photo that showed the cake already half eaten.
H-E-B Customers Have Reported Other Cake Decorating Fails
Jenn isn’t the first customer to share a cake that didn’t turn out quite as expected.
One of the more notorious examples happened in 2023, when a Texas mom ordered a Minion-themed birthday cake for her son from an H-E-B bakery.
According to her video, she specifically asked for solid yellow and blue sections, large swirls, and the character’s distinctive goggles. Instead, she received a cake with an ombré yellow, green, and blue body, mismatched eyes, and no goggles.
Another TikTok user reported a different issue after ordering a birthday cake directly from H-E-B’s website without requesting any additional customization.
When they picked it up, however, they said the cake looked considerably more lackluster than the version advertised online.
A H-E-B “cake fail” also appears on Reddit’s r/ExpectationVsReality.
A customer said they ordered a 25th birthday cake from H-E-B for a friend and shared side-by-side photos of the inspiration and finished product. “Not what I expected,” they wrote.
The inspiration featured a polished silver coin-style cake. The chain bakery’s version, meanwhile, featured a much more crudely drawn coin face with an oversized pointed nose and hair that looked scribbled into the frosting.
