Texas man pays $50 for a ‘Big New Yorker’ Pizza Hut pie. Then he opens the box and regrets spending on delivery

A Texas-based Pizza Hut customer has called out the chain after opening his $50 order and experiencing deep disappointment.
Customer Mike Japhet (@mikejaphet) filmed himself opening his order: two large pizzas and a side of wings. He later posted the video to TikTok, where it got over 36,600 views and almost 500 comments.
What Was Wrong With His Pizza Hut Order?
“So I just ordered from Pizza Hut,” Japhet says at the start of the video.
He says he ordered a Big New Yorker pizza, a stuffed-crust pizza, and a boneless wings entree with fries.
Then he shows the receipt. “$44.88,” he says.
After adding a $5.22 tip, his total came out to $50.10.
Then he shows the first issue.
“Tell me why this box is crushed,” he says, filming the two boxes sitting on his counter. “This box is crushed. Look at this.”
Japhet opens the Big New Yorker box, showing a pizza that appears disheveled inside. The slices are not sitting in a perfect circle, though the pizza itself still appears mostly intact.
“That’s how it came,” he says.
Then he opens the stuffed-crust pizza box. That box also appears slightly crushed, and the pizza is messy inside.
“Man, Pizza Hut, y’all gotta do better than this,” he says. “What the hell?”
Finally, he opens the My Hut box with the wings and fries. The wings and sauce appear to have shifted around during delivery.
“This doesn’t even look good,” Japhet says.
At that point, he says he plans to take the order back to Pizza Hut instead of letting the situation go.
“So I’m taking it back to the Pizza Hut,” he says. “I’m gonna go get it now myself.”
He says he’s even more disappointed since he believes he left a good tip.
“And I paid the tip, people,” he says. “$5.22. That’s crazy.”
$5.22 on $44.88 is an 11.63% tip. That is acceptable, but slightly below the more common 15%–20% range for pizza delivery. NerdWallet’s current guide says a standard delivery tip for pizza is between 15%–20%.
Commenters Blamed Everything From The Tip To Pizza Hut Itself
In the comments, some viewers thought the delivery driver may have been unhappy with the tip.
“They saw that $5 tip,” one commenter wrote.
In the replies under that comment, some people pointed out how low delivery drivers can be paid. One commenter claimed base pay can be as low as $3 per order, which is why drivers often rely on tips.
Another viewer also blamed the delivery experience on the tip amount.
“Disgruntled Delivery Driver all over that pizza,” they wrote. “Gotta tip more then $5 bucks. On a $45 order. Gas is high Buddy”
But others did not think the issue started with the driver.
“First problem I see is it’s Pizza Hut,” one commenter wrote.
Another viewer told Japhet to avoid the chain entirely.
“Order from your local pizza shop,” they wrote. “It’s always 20x better than this garbage”
Other Pizza Hut Customers Have Complained About Similar Issues
Japhet isn’t the only one to have complained about his order arriving in less-than-pristine condition.
For example, a Texas Pizza Hut customer said on TripAdvisor that their pizzas arrived stuck to the top. “This happens and wouldn’t have been a big deal, but when [I] called back to get it replaced I was basically accused of trying to get a free pizza,” they wrote. “A little back and forth with the district manager and after a while I decided to give them another chance only to learn my address had been flagged for no deliveries.”
Another customer said their Pizza Hut order did not properly fit the box staff put it in. “This is stupid, BS, and whoever did this should be ashamed of themselves!!!” they wrote.
