Christopher Nolan Debunks Claims That Cinema Is Dying

In the last six years, a dominant question about the entertainment industry has been whether cinemas have had their day. Barely a month goes by without an unexpected box office bomb reviving the question over and over. For Christopher Nolan, there really is nothing to worry about as he believes the medium is still thriving with a new generation despite what some would have you believe.
Nolan’s The Odyssey is bringing the mythological Greek epic to life in a whole new mega-budget blockbuster. The director’s first movie since the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer is certainly not the one that many expected from the filmmaker, but it is a popular genre and the film has an all-star cast. Will The Odyssey bring in the audiences that other recent movies like The Mandalorian & Grogu and Supergirl have not?
Nolan, who stands as one of the most outspoken directors on the subject of the importance of the theatrical experience, recently told BBC News that he really doesn’t see cinema fading away despite big changes in the industry, and pushed back against the constant doom-mongering about the theatrical experience’s struggles with new, younger audiences in particular.
Speaking to the BBC ahead of the release of The Odyssey, Nolan broke down his view on how there is nothing to suggest that people are no longer willing to go to cinemas, and how it is just about putting the right movies out there. He said:
“I think there are a lot of different ways to interest people in coming to the movies. This summer you’ve seen movies like Backrooms and Obsession that are made by young filmmakers connecting with their audience. Out biggest segment of people who come to the movies are young people and it always has been.”
Christopher Nolan Believes in the Theatrical Experience
Nolan’s mention of two of 2026’s biggest box office surprises, the horror double-header of Backrooms and Obsession, brings a lot of the director’s comments into focus. Both of those movies were made by young, innovative filmmakers finally getting their moment to make their mark on the big screen. It is not a coincidence that those movies have pulled in huge crowds thanks to word of mouth and excellent reviews.
Nolan’s comments about the films connecting with the right audiences right on the mark. Now it is up to Nolan to speak to his own audience with The Odyssey. Can the director pull off another potential Oscar-nominee and box office goldmine? It is hard to doubt either will end up being true. The epic nature of the movie has awards success written all over it, and despite numerous complaints online about The Odyssey‘s casting choices and reworking of some parts of Homer’s ancient text, it is almost guaranteed to become one of the highest grossing movies of the year.
Of course, another director with a deep love for the theatrical experience is Steven Spielberg, who had a disappointing box office run with his alien movie Disclosure Day, but continues to promote cinemas endlessly. Now it is Nolan’s turn to step up to the plate and see if he can hit a homerun for cinemas.
The Odyssey will be released in cinemas on July 17, 2026, as one of the biggest and most unpredictable swings of the year. Nolan has proven that he can deliver movies people really want to see. Can he follow the success of Oppenheimer with another huge hit? We don’t have long to wait to find out whether Nolan is correct and audiences will still pack out theaters for the right movie.

Anthony Lund has spent more years than he would like to remember getting lost in movies, TV shows and toys. For that reason, writing on the subject comes naturally after more than 20 years working in and around the entertainment industry. In a time long forgotten, Anthony has written for WhatCulture, ComicBook, several defunct publications and sites, and spent 5 years with MovieWeb. A child of the 80s, he is the owner of almost 2000 books, more toys than his children, three Warner Bros. Store Gremlins and a production used Howard The Duck movie script. He has built up a deep knowledge of movie trivia, iconic quotes, and will stand by his belief that Aliens beats The Empire Strikes Back and Terminator 2 as the greatest sequel of all time.
