Man Realizes His Girl Left Something Common in His Car, Thinks Nothing of It. Then He Sees the Car Next to Him: ‘Are Y’all Marking Territories?’

A man noticed his girlfriend left one of her hair clips in his car. Then he realized that the car next to him had one in the same spot.
Deli (@itsdeli), a Texas-based content creator, said he thought his girlfriend accidentally left the clip at first. Then he realized it may have been deliberate.
His post detailing the realization has received more than 21.1 million views.
Why Are Women Leaving Hair Clips?
Deli started his video explaining that he thought his girlfriend left something in his car. In the video, he showed a flower clip that his girlfriend presumably attached to the seatbelt on the passenger’s side.
Deli panned to the other car and zoomed in on a hair clip inside it, which happened to be positioned in the same way as the flower clip in his car.
“I’m starting to think this is universal,” the TikToker said. “ Are y’all marking territories with hair clips?”
How Does ‘Marking Territory’ Work?
The concept of “marking territory” has existed for years, and many women do it for a variety of reasons. All the way back in 2005, a person posted a question to SoSuave asking why a girl would “purposely leave… her stuff at your place/car.” Those in the thread had a variety of answers to explain the behavior.
One person said, “If they leave some girly item at your place they know it will be noticed by any other girl who is in there after her. It’s a ‘catty’ ploy to make any other girls jealous and discourage them from pursuing you.”
Another person said it happens because of high interest.
“When a chick does that it means that she is really into the guy but he does not pay enough [attention] to her as she wants him too. Therefore she leaves her stuff in his car and then it assures that he at least calls her to tell her that she forgot something and beacuse it is in his car he would driver up to her and give it back.”
A U.K. survey published in 2021 estimated that 34% of women are “very likely” to intentionally leave an item at a partner’s house. 39% of those who said they would intentionally leave items behind said it was to “mark” their “territory.”
How Did Viewers React?
Viewers who knew about the idea of “marking territory” jokingly replied to the video.
“On my way! to tell shawdy cuzz u know too much,” one viewer said.
“Ladies we need to regroup they’ve discovered one of the strategies,” another commenter humorously added. Then another said, “‘Subjects are becoming aware’” in reference to Deli understanding why his girlfriend left the clip.
Multiple viewers told Deli not to remove the clip. “Shhh don’t worry it’s just decoration now,” one person said.
