Almost everyone doesn’t want others to perceive them as older than they actually are. This can especially be insulting if it’s as a senior citizen. Can there be an instance when it pays off? It did for this millennial woman who scored a senior discount at Bonefish Grill and took it in stride.

AARP Senior Discount For 40 Year Olds?

TikTok creator Dee (@moorelifemoorelove) shared her experience in a video. In the five-second clip, she unveils the receipt she received after paying. When she zooms in, she reveals to more than 281,000 viewers the fine print.

“@BonefishGrill AARP??? I’m only 40,” she expresses in the text overlay, referring to the 10% AARP discount at the top left corner.

However, Dee found it humorous. “Went out to eat and they gave me a 10% AARP discount…I’m 40. Clearly I’ve been carrying life a little too well,” she jokes in the caption accompanied by a laughing emoji.

In December, another woman unintentionally joined the seniors club. A trip to Ross without makeup earned Katie a Tuesday Club discount. Although she cashed it in, she didn’t take it lightly as Dee did. Instead, it negatively impacted her self-esteem, vowing to never leave the house without makeup again.

Viewers Declare This A Win

“A blessing is a blessing thank ya,” one viewer commented.

“10% is 10%,” another stated.

“I do not care- I’m confident enough to accept a discount in this economy,” a third remarked.

“Man idc what discount you put on my check, as long as there’s a discount lol,” a fourth echoed.

“Take what you can get in this world. It doesn’t give you much if that’s what they gave you today take it and enjoy it. Rock on Senior,” a fifth said.

Even the seafood restaurant quipped, “Gonna pretend we didn’t see this.”

Is There An Age Limit To Apply To AARP?

When you think of AARP, an older person might pop into mind. This organization centers around that age group implied by its full name, American Association of Retired Persons. However, it might be surprising to know that anyone at 18 can apply for a membership and access hundreds of discounts, programs, resources, and the rewards program, according to the company’s website. Young people may be able to take advantage of this, as there are certain benefits only for the 50-and-over folks.

What Is The Age of a Senior Citizen?

Hitting certain ages in the United States are milestones to gaining specific rights and privileges. At 16-years-old, teenagers can receive their driver’s license and drive without adult supervision. At 18, defined as legal adulthood, people can vote, sign contracts, and get married. Three years later, at 21, is considered they can legally drink and qualify for credit cards. The list goes on for young adults, but the same applies to the aging population.

Once someone hits 50, they can claim AARP benefits and 55 is ‘early senior’ where they plan retirement, qualify for senior living, and retail discounts. Subsequently, they can start claiming early Social Security. Typically, 65 is widely considered the senior citizen age since they become eligible for Medicare, per Interim HealthCare. After 67 is the benchmark for retirement and to receive all benefits.
