Mother Sends Her Son on a Scavenger Hunt After Her Death. What He Found Made Him Laugh ‘At Least She Gave You Your Allowance’

Grief is a tricky emotion to navigate, especially when it’s associated with death. What makes it even more difficult for those who’ve lost their loved ones is the paperwork, the ceremony of it all—not to mention sorting out the inheritance. But Will (@ggpapay) was sent on a wild scavenger hunt by his mother upon her passing. What he found put a smile on his face.

Will explained that he’d been taking out his mother’s things because she had just passed away. But she did leave him one last message before she left.

“Look everywhere. Don’t throw anything away without looking through it,” she told him. Will followed her advice. So when he was clearing the house out, he opened a photo frame with a blurred photo. Behind the frame was $300.

But that wasn’t all. Will looked in her jewelry box—and while most of the contents were already valuable, he also found $100 tucked away. He also opened a small, tabletop cabinet’s drawer. It had $100 hidden in it.

Will searched the bookshelf, and three books had $20 stashed in each one. While he isn’t done looking yet, Will has already found $560 in total. Needless to say, it’s an interesting way to acquire inheritance. Some families fight over estates, while others send their kids scurrying through the house.

“So, she kept her word. She said to look through everything, so I am. And as sad as it is—I’m very upset about it, losing my mom—it’s funny to see all this. It makes me laugh,” Will commented.

A wild scavenger hunt idea

There’s grief to be felt in looking through a deceased loved one’s cherished possessions. It’s what keeps them tied to earth—but Will’s mom, at the very least, left him a fun, little chore. It wouldn’t resurrect her, but it does make the cleaning process feel a bit lighter.

Although Will looks visibly upset, his spirits were cheered by his mother’s last antic. TikTok found the gimmick interesting, if not hilarious.

One commenter wrote, “Your inheritance being a scavenger hunt is taking me out. Your inheritance being a scavenger hunt is taking me out.”

Another joked, “She left you that tax-free.” Surely, the IRS wouldn’t go after a grieving man?

A TikTok user felt inspired but wanted to implement a twist for when she goes. She wrote, “I’m gonna do this for my kids, except it’s gonna be notes saying, ‘If I had money, this is where it would’ve been. Love ya! Mom.'” Because who could even afford to leave an inheritance in this economy?

Someone else said, “Your mom giving you one last chore is amazing. At least she gave you your allowance lmao.”

A distrust of institutions

But it seems that it isn’t entirely uncommon for some old people to leave money around the house for their loved ones to find. For some, they’d found inheritance in the strangest places of their deceased parents’ homes.

One commenter wrote, “My mother-in-law lived on a very limited income. She left 30k in a coffee can in a freezer.”

Meanwhile, another stated, “Omg, my mom did the same thing!!! We ended up with $15,000!!!”

A possibility as to why it seems common with elderly people was explained by another commenter on TikTok. They wrote, “That generation didn’t trust banks. Honestly, that’s smart, because it’s tax-free.”

As silly as his mother’s scavenger hunt gimmick was, she might have inspired a new generation to follow in her footsteps for when it’s their turn.
