Asian woman shows husband visibly disgusted at her Thai food. Now the internet is clocking them: ‘He doesn’t respect you’

A Thai woman eats a homemade noodle dish at the kitchen table. When she pans the camera over to capture her white husband’s reaction, the internet suggests he’s being “disrespectful” to her.
In a video with over 3.1 million views, TikTok couple The Evert Family (@the.evertfamily) shows the husband covering his nose with his shirt across the room as he watches TV. He appears disgusted by the smell of the dish, which contains noodles, tomatoes, vegetables, and a savory broth.
On-screen text reads, “Life as a husband who has an Asian wife.” The caption continues, “He married to me because he loves me.”
Was the white husband disrespecting his wife’s food?
The video quickly went viral, garnering thousands of comments criticizing the husband’s reaction to the smell of the Thai food.
“No. this is completely disrespectful,” one writes.
“That’s really not funny disrespecting someone’s culture like that,” another remarks.
A third adds, “Cannot relate. My husband loves and embraces my cultures and cuisines.”
Other TikTokers even post their reactions to the viral video. TikToker Tay (@buffetgirlss) suggests, “He doesn’t respect you. You’re a fetish to him.” Tay continues, questioning why she observes some women of color choosing to be with white men who don’t embrace their culture.
“For you to sit there and act like it’s cute for him to be disrespecting and then post it on the internet is [expletive] bizarre,” she says.
Did the Thai woman respond to commenters’ concerns?
The woman pushes back in a video reply to a comment suggesting that her white husband disrespects her culture.
“We don’t have to eat the same food to share the same heart,” she writes. “He loves his cheese, I love my Sum Tum, and we celebrate our differences instead of forcing each other to be the same.”
However, many commenters double down on their criticism.
“Food is the door to one’s culture and if you can not respect that simple door then…what can they respect??” a viewer questions.
“He isnt celebrating it if hes telling you it stinks,” a second says.

She shares a final follow-up video, showing her husband filming her trying food at a Thai restaurant. She aims to disprove that her husband won’t join her at the same table when she eats Thai food. The TikTok couple has since turned off or restricted comments on many of their videos.
Some comments share their support for the couple, telling them not to listen to the negativity.
“Ignore the strangers online. Not liking your traditional food is not a big deal,” one comments.
Another adds, “Guys some people don’t like the smells of some foods crazy right.”
