70yo woman assaults a woman standing with forearm crutches at Goodwill to buy a shelf she was checking out: ‘Who knew thrifting was so competitive?’

It’s a jungle out there in the tchotchke section.

70yo woman assaults a woman with forearm crutches while thrifting a shelf at Goodwill.

We often think of thrifting as a slow, peaceful hunt for hidden treasures. But for one TikTok creator, a trip to Goodwill turned into an accidental survival game. The worst part? It was all for an old, haunted-looking shelf.

TikTok creator Paige (@rawr_its_paige) is sparking a massive conversation after sharing a story about being physically sidelined by a fellow shopper at Goodwill. The video, captioned “Who knew thrifting was so competitive?”, gives us a jarring look at how quickly a Saturday afternoon can devolve into a struggle for furniture.

With over 25,000 views, her story highlights a growing intensity in the world of thrifting that many shoppers are unprepared to face. And not even the senior citizens are backing off.

A crowded thrifting store? It’s a stage for chaos

Paige described her local Goodwill as a “hot mess,” where narrow aisles are often blocked by overflowing buggies and aggressive shoppers. As someone who uses two forearm crutches for mobility, Paige requires a bit more space to maneuver. However, she found herself cornered in the back of the store while examining a corner shelf.

Paige explains that she was standing just inches from the item, turning it around to check for mold or missing pieces. She even took a photo to visualize where it might fit in her home. But nothing prepared her for what happened in the next split second.

The creator was physically assaulted for a shelf by a senior citizen

Despite having “four points of contact” with the ground for stability, Paige was suddenly and violently “hip-checked.” To her surprise, it was a woman she described as a “ninja” in her sixties or seventies. The force of the blow knocked Paige into the shelves behind her. And while Paige was still reeling, the woman snatched the price tag off the shelf right from under her hands.

Before leaving Paige on the ground, the woman also flashed a “sh*t-eatin’ smile at her.” Then, she straight up marched to the front of the store to pay before Paige could even process the interaction.

Reselling pressure may be fueling thrifting rage

Many viewers are wondering if this level of aggression is becoming the new normal. While “rage shopping” was once reserved for Black Friday, the rise of the “side hustle” and professional reselling has turned thrift stores into high-stakes environments.

When items can be flipped for a significant profit online, some shoppers begin to view others as obstacles rather than neighbors. This “bad will in the Goodwill” often manifests as physical intimidation or even theft directly out of another person’s cart.

The strategy of grabbing first and thinking later

To survive the modern thrift environment, many seasoned shoppers have adopted a “possession is nine-tenths of the law” mentality. The prevailing advice in the community is to physically claim any item of interest the moment you see it. If it is small, put it in your cart. If it is large, keep your hand on the tag or the item itself while you decide.

By the time you step back to take a photo or “think about it,” a more aggressive shopper, or a “thrifting ninja,” will likely have already claimed it.

People recounted their own horror stories at Goodwill

The comments section of the TikTok video suggests that Paige’s experience is far from isolated. While expressing sympathy for Paige, many users shared their own stories of “thrift store war.”

“I had a foot spa ripped out of my hands… she said she needed it more than I did,” one shared, proving that age is no barrier to retail entitlement. “I got a mirror taken out of my cart while I was in the fitting room,” another shared, highlighting that even “claimed” items aren’t always safe.

One viewer also strikingly asked, “Nothing at goodwill is that serious. What is wrong with people?!” echoing the disbelief of many who shop for leisure.

Thrifting is a wild world

Paige’s story is a reminder that the “good” in Goodwill doesn’t always extend to the shoppers in the aisles. While she was just looking for a place to display her Lego sets, her encounter with an aggressive “ninja” proves that in the world of thrifting, you have to be ready for anything.

We hope Paige found a replacement shelf that didn’t come with a side of assault. And if you’re planning a Goodwill trip anytime soon, keep your crutches steady and your hands on the price tags.
