The term “alpine divorce” has gained traction online after a woman’s video about being left alone on a hike went viral.

Now, creators are weighing in on how common the experience might be.

TikTok creator @everafteriya posted a short clip of herself walking along a mountain trail while sounding visibly upset. Her video went viral with over 15.8 million views.

“POV: you go on a hike with him in the mountains but he leaves you alone by yourself and you realize he never liked you to begin with,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay.

As she walks, she can be heard saying things like, “Never again with him” and “I hate him so much.”

Commenters View the Situation as Extremely Dangerous and Common

In the comments section, viewers stressed how common the phenomenon is and the safety concerns around it.

“There’s a name for this, alpine divorce,” one user wrote. “This happens frequently enough that there’s a support group for survivors.”

“My boyfriend did this to me,” another user shared. “I found another hiker to show me how to get back then I went home and blocked his number.”

“I had a BF leave me on the hike out of the Grand Canyon,” a third wrote. “A very nice man from Norway helped carry my pack and walked with me. It took me 12hrs to walk out.

Other commenters shared tips for anyone who may find themselves in a similar situation.

“If this ever happens change your voicemail immediately and say where you are, who you were with, what day you and time you went etc!!” someone advised. “When people notice you’re missing and start calling this could absolutely save your life with a dead phone or no service. Also please tell loved ones where you are going beforehand!”

“Ladies!!!! I cannot stress this enough get yourself a trail tracking app that doesn’t require cell signal to work,” suggested another.

Was This a Life-Threatening Situation?

The term “alpine divorce” likely comes from a fictional book of the same name by author Robert Barr, in which a man plots to murder his wife by pushing her off a cliff during a trip to the Swiss mountains.

Similar scenarios have been alleged in real life. Just last week, Austrian climber Thomas Plamberger was found guilty of gross negligent manslaughter after his partner, Kerstin Gurtner, froze to death on Austria’s highest mountain last year.

However, details shared by @everafteriya suggest her situation may not have been life-threatening. For example, in the video, she passes two other hikers on the trail but does not stop to ask for help, suggesting she wasn’t fearing for her safety.

In a separate video addressing viewers’ questions, she explained that her partner said he wanted to reach the summit before other hikers.

“He said wanted to get the top of the the mountain before other people on the trail so he said let’s run and I like to run so I wasn’t against it but also didn’t see the point,” she wrote. “Eventually, I couldn’t see him anymore because he was running faster than me!”

Another viewer asked whether they had arrived on the trail together.

“Yes, and we also left together,” she wrote, suggesting they reunited later.

The Term ‘Alpine Divorce’ Has Exploded in Popularity

Google Trends data shows that the keyword “alpine divorce” peaked in popularity on Feb. 24, just days after @everafteriya posted her video.

On TikTok, the top videos under the Alpine hashtag focus less on mountain climbing and more on reactions to the viral clip, with users sharing their own stories after seeing it.

The spike in interest likely has something to do with both the video’s popularity and the recent conviction in a real-life mountain death that some have compared to an alpine divorce.
