Can you ask Dollar Tree to hold items for you? Michigan woman calls about Valentine’s Day cassettes to find out: ‘Your dollar tree answers the phone?’

When you think of Valentine’s Day gifts, flowers, chocolate, and the occasional stuffed animal may pop into mind. While people rush the stores to snag these specific items, social media users are swarming the nearest Dollar Tree for a different reason: the Recordable Valentine’s Day Gift Cassette.
What Is The Dollar Tree Recordable Valentine’s Day Gift Cassette?
Last year, the Dollar Tree tapes exploded in popularity. Now, they’re making another comeback for the younger generation to enjoy once again. Consumers can choose between two tapes: red ‘Love Songs’ and pink ‘Mixtape 4 You’ for $1.50. The vintage tapes could stir nostalgia for Gen X and Baby Boomers, evoking memories of recording their favorite songs in the 70s through the 90s.
Instead of recording music, people are using the Dollar Tree versions to create personalized messages for their loved ones to cherish a lifetime, according to Yahoo. Unlike old school tapes, these ones only require two AAA batteries and pressing a button to play the recording. Think of it as a voice memo or voicemail.
Because these items are still flying off the shelves, one Michigan-based woman revealed a clever idea to secure them without wasting her time: calling the store.
A Dollar Tree Adventure
“I’m on my way to the Dollar Tree to get me the viral cassettes, ” TikTok creator Samaria (@snwl2140) says excitedly while driving. “I called in advance. They said they got them. I said, ‘Keep them aside for me.’”
Then, she pulls into the car-clogged parking lot. But this doesn’t stop her from taking 4.1 million viewers on her quest. As the content creator enters the store, she darts straight to the Valentine’s Day section.
“So, here are the Valentine’s Day stuff right here,” she says, unveiling a neat and organized shelf of colorful merchandise. “I kind of wanna see if they have some more.”
When Samaria approaches the top shelf, she spots several tapes in the cardboard display container.
“Oh, my gosh! You guys, look! They have them,” she gasps, gushing with happiness. Individually, she takes four tapes. “I should get one for my grandma, my mom, my sister, my man,” she says.
Needless to say, her trip was a success. “I secured the bag! I’m so excited!” she concludes, squealing while holding the bag full of the viral tapes triumphantly.
What Did Viewers Think?
Unlike Samaria, many haven’t had the same luck as her, a common complaint on the product’s review page.
“I keep checking but I haven’t found them,” one viewer shared.
“Mine didn’t have them,” another echoed.
“I’ve never found them and I have 9 in my area,” a third stated.
However, some were more focused on how she called her location and they answered it.
“Your dollar tree answers the phone?” one commenter asked.
“The dollar tree is one of my favorite places. Never have I thought I could call and they would answer though,” a second stated.
Does Dollar Tree Reserve Items?
Essentially, Samaria’s case was out of the ordinary. Although a location may disclose if a product is available, holding onto it is another story. A similar subject was discussed on a r/DollarTree subreddit, where employees weren’t allegedly allowed to keep merchandise for themselves, let alone customers.
“Our [assistant store manager] told me that nothing can be held for a customer to purchase at a later time, not even an hour. Everything must be on the floor, available for immediate purchase. Not to say I haven’t held something for a customer every now and again but told the customer when I leave shift, I will return to the floor,” an alleged worker explained.
Keep in mind that each location is different and results may vary.
