The Biggest Mystery of the Golden Globes Continues: Who Was Leonardo DiCaprio Talking To?
Amid the celebrities and the glitz and glamour, the Golden Globes always manage to find ways to surprise us. The award show is still being spoken about over a week later… and we have a very funny mystery surrounding Leonardo DiCaprio to thank for that.
DiCaprio, who was nominated for his work in One Battle After Another, went viral for a lot of reasons during this year’s Globes. The very specific jokes host Nikki Glaser made about him during the opening monologue. The funny sight of him and his co-star Sean Penn sitting next to each other in such a formal setting. And one specific moment caught on camera, where DiCaprio appears to be yapping to somebody about the award-winning Netflix juggernaut KPop Demon Hunters.
In the moment, DiCaprio gestures to someone off camera, appearing to say: “I was watching you with the KPop thing. You were like, ‘Is that KPop?’” This has since led to plenty of speculation about who the heck he was even talking to. Martin Scorcese? Guillermo del Toro? Somebody else entirely?
Initially, the answer seemed to be DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another co-star, Teyana Taylor, who revealed to Access Hollywood that the two of them had talked about KPop Demon Hunters at some point in the night.
“I want to say we might have been talking about KPop Demon Hunters, because I was so happy when they won, because my kids love KPop Demon Hunters,” Taylor said at the time. “So I was over there just jamming, and I think he caught me jamming and that’s when we started, like, talking about it.”
Days later, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Taylor walked this back.
“So when I first seen [the clip], I didn’t watch the whole thing,” Taylor explained. “So I was like, ‘Oh you’re talking about KPop Demon Hunters, he’s talking about me.’ But then I watched it and they was doing the lip-read thing, and I had to call Leo. I was like, ‘You can’t be talking to me, were you talking to me? Because I already told people you was talking to me.’ So apparently he had two KPop Demon Hunter conversations that night, so KPop Demon Hunters was just in his mouth all night.”

These mysteries have become part of the fun of the Golden Globes. A few years ago, a very emotive interaction between Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez quickly went viral online. Lip readers were able to figure out that the two were gossiping about something, speculating that it was about Gomez being turned down for a photo with Timothee Chalamet and Kylie Jenner.
Gomez later confirmed that wasn’t the case, revealing on Instagram that: “Noooooo I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up. Not that that’s anyone business.” (The biggest theory since then has been that Gomez’s two “friends” in question were her Only Murders in the Building co-stars Martin Short and Meryl Streep.)
So, we still don’t entirely know who DiCaprio was talking to about KPop Demon Hunters. Maybe someone will get him to reveal the answer later on in One Battle After Another‘s awards cycle. Either way, it remains a mystery for now… which is, honestly, kind of fun.
