The Disney era of ‘Doctor Who’ has come to an end. But what does that mean for the show?
Doctor Who was part of Disney+’s slate of shows for two seasons. But now, that collaboration has come to an end. And fans are worried about what it means for the series moving forward.
In a release from Deadline, the BBC did say that the show will return and that Russell T. Davies will return for the Christmas special. We know that the end of season 2 featured Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper and we don’t really know what that means for the character quite yet. But that’s now on the BBC and not Disney to explain.
Lindsay Salt, BBC’s drama director, thanked the company for “being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea.” But then made a statement about the future of the franchise for fans.
“The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026,” she added. “We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”
The Disney/BBC partnership was a big deal
Fans of Doctor Who know how difficult it used to be to watch the series here in the United States. For a long while, we had to wait quite a while to watch the new episodes. Then, the BBC and BBC America would at least air the episodes on the same day.
With Disney+, we were a bit more all on the same page with show. That is, until now. Hopefully there is a deal struck so that we here in the States get the show at the same time it airs everywhere else. But it will be interesting to see what happens next with Doctor Who!
