Ethan Peck as Spock

Did ‘Star Trek: Mission Chicago’ Leak Spock’s First Name?

At the Mission Chicago Star Trek convention, there were some exciting announcements and revelations! Alongside some excellent cosplay, there were plenty of teasers for the newest upcoming Trek show, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The show debuts on May 5th, and we’ve gotten new character trailers, AND, now, thanks to the posters put up around Mission Chicago, some new information about them as well! In particular, our favorite science officer, Mr. Spock!

Obviously our favorite Vulcan, Spock has been a part of Star Trek from the pilot episode of the original series. In fact, Leonard Nimoy’s character was the only one from the original pilot episode (“The Cage”) to survive and make it onto the regular series. In J.J. Abrams Kelvin timeline movies, he is played by Zachary Quinto, and in Star Trek: Discovery Ethan Peck was cast as a young, pre-Kirk Spock. And he will be returning to the role alongside Anson Mount’s Captain Pike and Rebecca Romijn’s Number One for Strange New Worlds.

The clever eyes of CinemaBlend at Mission Chicago spotted some important information about Mr. Spock on the Strange New Worlds character posters. Namely, that he now has a supposedly canonical first name. The poster depicts Spock standing atop a boulder in the midst of a rocky canyon and the name written below him was… a little surprising!

So what is Spock’s full name?

UPDATE: Unfortunately we still have to wait to find out! After fans reacted with excitement about the names on the Strange New Worlds posters for Spock and Dr. M’Benga, Paramount Plus rushed to correct the mistake. They issued an apology and a statement that said:

“At Star Trek: Mission Chicago, we inadvertently displayed posters with Spock and M’Benga’s names that were incorrect. Sometimes when you work at warp speed, mistakes are made. While Spock and M’Benga do indeed have first names, they have yet to be revealed.”

The name on the poster was S’Chn T’Gai Spock. Die-hard fans will recognize it as the full name given to him in the 1985 Star Trek novel, Ishmael, written by Barbara Hambly. In the novel, Spock travels back to 1860s Seattle in a bizarre crossover event with the ABC series Here Come the Brides. Bizarre because it involves Spock having to stop the Klingons from murdering the main character of the show (who was trying to entice women to come to the new town)—and especially because the show went off the air in 1970. But hey, fanfic is eternal!

As for Dr. M’Benga, the head medical officer on board the enterprise (in the original series Dr. M’Benga was played by Booker Bradshaw and was secondary to Bones McCoy), his character poster mistakenly listed his full name as: Jabilo M’Benga. This name also comes from a Trek novel, 2005’s Harbinger by David Mack, the first book in the Vanguard series.

We’re still waiting for the official announcement of their actual first names.
