Look, we all love Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but this new news in particular is really getting our hopes up about it. According to Comic Book Resource, Sony is looking into creating spinoff shows based on our favorite characters from the film. The problem? Sony doesn’t own the rights to anything Spider-Man-related on television. In fact, a 2009 deal that returned the TV rights to Marvel led to the destruction of existing Spider-Man TV properties.
So how would it work out? It’s hard to say. Disney is launching its own streaming television service, which means they’d want Peter Parker to exist on their own platform. Disney isn’t exactly one for just easily giving anything back (just ask fans of public domain rights), and with the success of their current Spider-Man film agreement with Sony, I don’t really see them letting Sony take more of the Spider-Man property back than they have to.
If anything, the success of Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse would make me think that Disney would try harder to get more of the universe for themselves than give any ground to Sony.
The idea behind the show itself is smart, though, if Sony can pull it off. Within the context of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, we didn’t get to see too many instances with Penni Parker or Spider-Ham that weren’t part of the larger picture. Giving them both their own shows to flesh out their characters a bit more, and let us see how they exist in their own universes, could be great for the potential future of the Spider-People franchise.
A television series about our favorite characters would be a great way to build out the world, allowing them to come together for more animated features—that is, if Sony can work out the rights. I still don’t have high hopes that Disney would willingly give that to Sony unless it meant some big changes for Peter Parker within the MCU.
And please, don’t get rid of my sad, dad bod Peter Parker from Spider-Verse. He’s my favorite.
